HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

K-Wings End 2008 with 7-3 Drubbing of Lumberjacks

Mike Modugno-Director of Public Relations and Broadcaster

December 31, 2008

Kalamazoo, MI- The Kalamazoo Wings know how to throw a party. In front of a Wings Stadium crowd of 4,696, the K-Wings receive offensive production from eleven players, dropped the gloves three times and disposed of the Muskegon Lumberjacks 7-3 during the 7th Annual New Year’s Eve Bash, presented by COOL 101 FM and WWMT.

Kalamazoo started the scoring with Rick Cleaver’s 10th goal of the season at 9:24 of the first period. Cleaver buried a pass from Glenn Detulleo top shelf to put the K-Wings up 1-0.

Muskegon answered back with a breakaway goal from Chad Woollard (15th). Woollard received a pass at the blue line behind the two Kalamazoo defenders and scored five-hole on goaltender Joel Martin to knot the game at one.

The K-Wings regained the lead for good at 14:59 of the first period with a marker from Blair Manning.

Kalamazoo recorded 21 shots in the first period, a season high. The shot total also surpasses that of their previous game in Fort Wayne on Monday, December, 29th where the K-Wings only managed 19 shots the entire game.

The K-Wings came out firing early in the second period with a goal from Lucas Drake (14th) at 1:57. Manning recorded his first hat trick of the season with his second and third goals of the night coming back to back in the stanza, leading Kalamazoo to a 5-1 lead.

Cleaver added another tally for Kalamazoo midway through the period for his 11th goal of the season and his second on the night. After Cleaver recorded the K-Wings sixth goal, Muskegon opted to change goaltenders, sending Clayton Pool between the pipes.

Muskegon got on the board for the first time in the second period at 13:58, with a powerplay goal from Frank Littlejohn (12th).

Continuing to scorch opposing team’s netminders, Mark Nebus registered his team-leading 18th lamp-lighter of the season. The goal, which was assisted by Bryan Jurynec, extending Nebus’ point streak to five games and gives Jurynec a three-game point streak.

Billy Collins closed out the game’s scoring notching his 6th goal of the season for the Jacks.

Kalamazoo tagged a team season-high 51 shots on net. The 51 shots surrendered by Muskegon means the Lumberjacks have allowed an astonishing 97 shots over their past two games.

The victory for the K-Wings extends their IHL season-high home winning streak to eight games and keeps them tied with the Port Huron Icehawks on top of the IHL standings.

KALAMAZOO WINGS ROUT MUSKEGON LUMBERJACKS, 7-3

by Pam Shebest | Kalamazoo Gazette

December 31, 2008

KALAMAZOO -- The fireworks started early at Wings Stadium Wednesday night, and it was the Kalamazoo Wings who set them off.

The K-Wings fired 51 shots at two different Muskegon goalies in their 7-3 rout of the Lumberjacks to keep a share of the International Hockey League lead with the Port Huron Icehawks.

In addition, the two teams also treated the 4,696 fans to three bouts, with K-Wing Bryan Jurynec decisioning Luke Stauffacher in the first period, and K-Wing Jordan Little taking down Steven Later and then Muskegon's Marty Doyle winning the wrestling match with Blair Stayzer, both in the third.

Center Blair Manning accounted for three of the K-Wings goals with his first hat trick in several years.

"I had four in (Central League) Shreveport (2005-06)," Manning said. "I don't score too many goals, but I guess they come in bunches.

"A lot of times I pass up shots, but tonight I put one on net early. Tags (Anthony Battaglia) made a good play and I scored, then another one, and you think maybe it's one of those nights where you've got to keep putting the puck on net. I got fortunate and got a few goals."

Entering his 12th game since joining the K-Wings, Manning had just one goal and six assists before Wednesday.

The K-Wings came out firing early, pelting goalie Isaac Reichmuth with 21 shots in the first period alone. Two of those shots found the net.

With the puck pinballing around in front of the goalie, Rick Cleaver stopped it, juggled it, then buried it 9:24 into the game.

The only one of Muskegon's eight shots that got past K-Wings goalie Joel Martin was by Chad Woollard, who skated in all alone and fired 5-hole three minutes later.

The Lumberjacks ended the game with 31 shots.

Patience paid off for Manning, who gave the K-Wings a 2-1 advantage with 5:01 left in the period. Manning, parked beside the left post, waited until the puck squirted out of traffic in front, then tucked it behind Reichmuth.

The 21 shots are the most in a period for the K-Wings this season, and three more than Kalamazoo had in the entire game of its 4-3 shootout win at Fort Wayne last Monday.

The K-Wings scored four goals in the first 11:10 of the second period, including two by Manning, the hat-trick tally on the power play. On his second, Battaglia blocked Reichmuth's view, giving his linemate the perfect screen.

To start the second-period barrage, Cleaver fired a bullet that caromed off the end board and right to the stick of Lucas Drake, who one-timed it into the net.

After Manning's two second-period tallies, Cleaver got his second goal of the night, pounding home a rebound of a John Glavota shot.

That goal brought out the hook for Reichmuth, who was replaced in net by Clayton Pool.

The Lumberjacks' second goal of the night, with 6:02 left in the period and on the power play, came when the puck hit off the face of Frank Littlejohn, then off Martin, dropping behind the goalie and into the net.

The K-Wings continued the red-light special in the third period with Jurynec carrying the puck in and leaving it on the doorstep, where Mark Nebus popped it past Pool at 9:13.

Martin was hung out by the defense on Muskegon's final tally. Left all alone near the goal mouth, Billy Collins circled around the outstretched Martin, who was trying to poke the puck, then slid it into the net with 6:10 left in the game.
