HOGS FINISH OFF WOLVES 6-2 AT METROCENTRE
12/26/2008
Groulx, Brent, Skille, and Archer all had multi-point games
Rockford, Ill.- Four different defensemen recorded points and all six goals came from a different shooter as the Rockford IceHogs iced the Chicago Wolves 6-2 at the Rockford MetroCentre.
Defenseman Jimmy Sharrow punched in his first goal in an IceHogs uniform just 23 seconds into the game at the Rockford MetroCentre to start the scoring. The slap shot from the point came with assists from Jordan Hendry and Jack Skille.
But Chicago's Brett Sterling tied the game at one with a power-play marker at 8:47 in the first period. Helpers came from Joe Motzko and Jeff Hamilton.
Then Nathan Davis slipped the puck under Ondrej Pavelec at 17:09 to give the IceHogs the advantage again. Assists came from Dan Bertram and Andrew Archer.
In the second frame, Danny Groulx put a lamp-lighter over Pavelec's left shoulder on the power play at 10:07 with assists from Archer and Pascal Pelletier.
Joe Motzko came right back and scored his 19th goal of the season at seventh against the IceHogs in five games at 11:13 with assists from Steve Martins and Grant Lewis.
Evan Brophey poked in a lose puck in front of the net on a power play to give Rockford an insurance goal at 8:33 in the third. Tim Brent and Danny Groulx were credited with the assists.
Then Brent let an unassisted empty-net goal fly at 17:51 and Mike Radja put the final dagger in at 18:37 with assists from Petri Kontiola and Skille.
Corey Crawford finished with 30 saves in the win, while Pavelec had 16 saves. It is the most goals that the league's top goaltender has allowed all season. Chicago's power play was 1-for-5, while Rockford finished 2-for-6 on the advantage.
It is the first time since Nov. 26 that the IceHogs have scored two power-play goals in a game. In the last 10 games, the Hogs have recorded four man advantage markers.

ICEHOGS DROP WOLVES, 6-2
12/26/2008
ROCKFORD, Ill.---The Chicago Wolves fell behind 1-0 just 23 seconds into the game and couldn’t recover the rest of the way before sliding to an eventual 6-2 loss to the Rockford IceHogs at the Rockford MetroCentre Friday night.
Right wing Joe Motzko and left wing Brett Sterling provided the goals for Chicago while goaltender Ondrej Pavelec turned aside 16 of 21 shots in the loss.
The IceHogs jumped on the scoreboard 23 seconds into the contest when a shot by defenseman Jimmy Sharrow bounced in front of the crease and jumped over the glove of Pavelec.
Chicago (18-12-1-1) drew even, 1-1 on the power play at 8:47 of the first period. Sterling collected a cross-ice pass at the doorstep from Motzko and jammed the puck past the skate of Rockford goaltender Corey Crawford.
Rockford (16-11-0-3) inched ahead when center Nathan Davis broke away at center ice and chipped his own rebound above the pads of Pavelec to regain the lead for the IceHogs, 2-1 at 17:09 of the first frame.
Rockford increased their advanatge, 3-1, on the power play at 10:07 of the middle frame. Blueliner Danny Groux ripped a one-timer from the left circle past Pavelec top shelf. Pavelec (6-4-1) posted 16 saves in the loss.
The Wolves responded 66 seconds later with Motzko’s 19th tally of the season when he accepted a pass from center Steve Martins at the left circle and fired a long-wrister through traffic and behind Crawford. Crawford (9-3-1) recorded 30 saves on 32 shots.
Rockford regained its two-goal lead on the power play when center Evan Brophey skated to the slot and slipped a rebound shot in between the pads of Pavelec at 8:33 of the final frame.
Tim Brent added an empty net goal at 17:51 of the third period and center Mike Radja closed out scoring for Rockford 46 seconds later.

ICEHOGS ENJOY 6-GOAL OUTBURST IN WIN

ROCKFORD —
In need of a holiday victory, the IceHogs snapped out of a mini-skid with a fast start and a big finish, leading to a 6-2 win over the Chicago Wolves in a crowded MetroCentre on Friday night.
Rockford, winless in its previous three games and with just one win in the past two weeks, jumped out front almost immediately when defenseman Jimmy Sharrow’s bouncing puck found the net 23 seconds into the game. From there, the ’Hogs stayed aggressive, and stayed on top most of the way.
“We always want to do that. I always look for that, too. You don’t always get it that quick, but you look for it,” said Sharrow, who scored only his second goal of the year. “When you get one that quick, you can see there shoulders drop. And after that, we stayed after them.”
Chicago answered midway through the period to tie the game at one, but center Nathan Davis slapped back a rebound off his own shot to give the lead back to Rockford heading into the first intermission. Danny Groulx’s slapshot from the left wing boosted the lead to 3-1, but the Wolves got a late second-period goal by Joe Motzko, his 19th of the season, good for second-most in the league, to keep the pressure on.
After the furious finish by the ’Hogs, however, it wasn’t nearly enough as most of the 5,189 fans on hand left pleased.
“I thought the guys were really emotionally into this one. It was important to get out to a good start like we did, and we never let up,” IceHogs head coach Bill Peters said. “And in a divisional game like this, we needed that. The guys really needed that.”
Rockford, which finished with three goals in the game’s final 13 minutes, climbed to within four points of the division lead while knocking Chicago out of the top spot. They also kick started a stretch of seven games in nine days with a confidence-building victory.
“Any win right now is huge, especially a division game,” said Rockford goalie Corey Crawford, who had 30 saves on the night. “That was a nice start for this rush of games we’ve got coming up.”
Evan Brophey slid in a backhanded poke shot, center Tim Brent got an empty-net wrist shot goal and Mike Radja scored on a quick half-wrister, all unanswered in the final period. Rockford earned two power-play goals in one game for the first time in a month, getting just four power-play points in a 10-game stretch leading into Friday. The five goals allowed was also the most allowed by Chicago goalie Ondrej Pavelec — the AHL’s leading active goalie with a 1.49 goals-against average — all season.
