WOLVES PLAY MR. GRINCH, BEAT HOGS 4-1 IN ALLSTATE
12/21/2008
Four even-strength goals bury Hogs in final game before Christmas break
Rosemont, Ill.- The Chicago Wolves sent the Rockford IceHogs home without any Christmas presents Rockford IceHogs on Sunday at the Allstate Arena. Jack Skille scored Rockford's only goal in the 4-1 loss.
The Wolves took an early advantage thanks to an unassisted goal from Spencer Machacek at 1:42 in the first period. The goal came after a 20-minute power outage delayed the game just one minute in.
In the second, former Rockford IceHogs defenseman Tyson Marsh gave the Chicago Wolves the 2-0 advantage 59 seconds into the second period. Marsh blasted the puck past Antti Niemi with helpers from Jeff Hamilton and Brett Sterling for his first goal with Chicago.
But Skille found a lose puck in front of Ondrej Pavelec at 6:02 and chipped it into the goal to cut the Wolves' lead in half. Tim Brent earned an assist on the power-play marker.
Joe Motzko scored his sixth goal against the IceHogs this season at 11:46 with a helper from Sterling to give the Wolves the two-goal advantage again.
And Colin Stuart tacked on an insurance marker at 2:23 in the third with helpers from Steve Martins and Machacek.
Niemi finished with 29 saves, while Ondrej Pavelec has a strong 23 saves in his American Hockey League return. The Hogs held the Wolves off of the board on five power-play opportunities, while scoring in one of three chances.

WOLVES LEAVE ICEHOGS IN THE DARK, 4-1
12/21/2008
ROSEMONT, Ill.---The Chicago Wolves lit the lamp just 20 seconds after power was restored in the Allstate Arena following a short blackout, and the offense never dimmed again on the way to a 4-1 win over the Rockford IceHogs Sunday night.
One minute and 22 seconds into the game, the building's lights were knocked out by a power surge. As a thank you to fans' patience during the delay, anyone holding a ticket for the game may take the ticket stub to the Allstate Arena's box office beginning on Tue., Dec. 23 at 11 a.m., and redeem it for a complimentary ticket of equal value to the Fri., Jan. 2, game against Rockford at 7:30 p.m.
The victory helped Chicago (18-11-1-1) cling to first place in the tightly contested West Division, in which first and sixth place were separated by a three-point margin entering Sunday's tilt.
"(Ondrej) Pavelec was excellent tonight, he was very focused and looked like a true leader out there," said Wolves Head Coach Don Granato. "He has a real presence to him and that presence makes everyone more confident."
Wolves right wing Spencer Machacek opened scoring when he drove to the net and sunk his fourth goal of the season just seconds after the lights went on, to make the score 1-0 at 1:42 of the first period.
Defenseman Tyson Marsh gave Chicago a 2-0 lead and snagged the eventual game-winner when he took a backhanded dish from right wing Jeff Hamilton and cranked a long shot past Rockford netminder Antti Niemi, 59 seconds into the second period.
Wolves goaltender Ondrej Pavelec (6-3-1) stopped 23 of 24 shots in his return to Chicago, after being reassigned by the National Hockey League's Atlanta Thrashers on Friday. The 21-year-old netminder, who backstopped 11 NHL outings for the Thrashers, has held opponents to two or fewer goals in eight of his 10 appearances with the Wolves this season.
Rockford (15-11-0-3) pulled to 2-1 when Jack Skille hacked a rebound past Pavelec from the side of the net at 6:02 of the middle frame.
Joe Motzko's 18th goal of the year regained a two-goal lead for Chicago, 3-1. Left wing Brett Sterling took a shot from the top of the crease, which was denied by Niemi, but Motzko was perched at the corner and hammered home the rebound at 11:46 of the second stanza.
Left wing Colin Stuart rounded out the scoring for Chicago when he ripped a clean blast by Niemi 2:23 into the third period to put Chicago on top, 4-1, with just under 18 minutes to play.
Niemi (7-7-2) turned aside 29 shots for the IceHogs.
