since the original press conference almost two weeks ago, i've heard one mention of the new roadrunners in the local media. a couple of the local sports radio hacks were wondering out loud how the new echl team might be affected if the locked out nhl-ers joined up with a new incarnation of the wha. anyone following the progress of the new wha on boards like this know how unlikely it is that anything named "wha" will do anything. and any arizona minor league hockey fans also know how unreliable the local media is when it comes to covering their teams ...although i did see todd walsh at the wchl finals at vet's memorial a few years back. i almost fell over!

anyway, i just wanted to see if we could start up some dialogue about the new team. get some news (and rumors) going about the team, staff, players, logos, website ...or whatever. i, for one, am pretty psyched to have an alternative to $70 tickets ...that is, if the coyotes ever return.

so let's hear it, all you former mustangs, roadrunners, gila monsters ....scorch (oops!) fans.

i think it was a logo for a failed team, or a failed name change for a team, at least ...adirondack maybe (the barry melrose connection would be obvious)? a buddy sent it to me & i thought it was pretty funny.

anyway, i hope whoever designed it doesn't sue me for using it as an avatar.

I think you are right. I'm pretty sure it was one of the final choices that the fans got to vote on when the Adirondack Ice Hawks changed their name (Frostbite won, of course).

As far as the Roadrunners go, I'd vote for the original logo. I wonder if the Edmonton franchise owns its rights, seeing as how the Toronto logo was the same, other than Toronto in place of Phoenix.

I know it probably won't happen, but I had hoped they would unveil the logo and start producing mechandise soon. I will be in Scottsdale on vacation in about a month (for Cactus League baseball) and would buy some souvineers if they are available.

the old 'runners logo isn't too bad ...too cartoony for my tastes though (woody woodpecker, anyone?). i'll support them even if they just do something plain like the ny rangers jerseys. i just want minor hockey back ...whatever they look like. but they might as well have a good look about them while they're at it. the laredo bucks have shown that you don't have to look bush league just because you're a minor league club.

I own Flynnagain Prod., www.Flynnagain.com.....I designed the logo for the Adirondack Frostbite as sort of a "Melrose" gag....honestly, I never thought it would go any where and they bought and own it.......I just thought it funny seeing on an avitar

As I understand it, Edmonton ceded the "Roadrunners" name and owns, get this, "Road Runners." This apparently allows Phoenix to assume the old identity.

BTW, since others are watching, yes, I think bringing a hockey team just to fill dates in a larger building is going to have a short shelf life.

what kind of impact do you think the nhl lockout will have on attendance & interest in minor league hockey?

i will miss having the option to see the modanos, kovalchuks & brodeurs when they come to town. but i've been pretty down on the league because of escalating ticket prices for a while now. that's the main reason i've gotten into the minors so much. i paid twice as much for tickets to phoenix's first game in glendale arena last season as i did for tickets to the 1991 stanley cup finals.

so while i'll miss the couple of coyotes games a year we've been going to, i'll be pretty satisfied to have an echl club in town.

i was beginning to wonder if there was ever going to be any more news about the 'runners:

I visited the team shop in America West Arena last week. As expected, there were no Roadrunners merchandise available. Since they just unveiled the logo, that didn't surprise me. What did surprise me is that, with the exception of 1 employee, no one working in the store was even aware that the Roadrunners will be playing there this fall. :?

It's never too soon to start promoting. That's kind of hard though when your employees don't know you exist.

yeah, that's an all-too-common story with the minors. my hometown club (sort of ...about 40 miles from my hometown, actually), the texas wildcatters, are in their second year. and every time i mention them to a friend back home, it's the first they've heard of them. :? in fact, i've probably been to more games than most people in beaumont & i live 1200 miles away!

promoting your product would seem like business 101 to me.

So, what do you think of the new logo. I think it is even more "cartoony" than the original, but I really like it. I wish they would have had something to sell with the logo on it at America West when I was there.

ahh ...finally, the important stuff! nah, it's alright. i don't know how it could be more cartoony than the original though, which truly looked just like an actual famous cartoon character.

i like the new colors & the alternate "r" logo. it's an okay look. but a good logo & name are just bonuses to me.

i would have gone in another direction altogether. i've always liked the name "phoenix pharaohs." name kind of rolls comfortably off the tongue. pharaohs were desert kings, which goes with the region. it's unusual, but not something most people are unfamiliar with (thrashers, wildcatters, aeros). guess it'll never be anything more than my fantasy league name. i'm chasing rabbits ...sorry.

anyone heard when a website will be running? the az republic reported one would be up in a few days ...on feb. 2.

can anyone recommend a more active echl message board?
