How was the top 5 determined? Is this an "official" list or a personal opinion

i posted in another topic that it looks like Ferguson would be pre-season favorite for Player of the Year in the PBL. It will be interesting to see who of the new signings move up the top 5 list.

It's only opinion. It will be interesting when all the teams have full rosters.

Are Kenny Langhorne and Randy Gill that good?

Langhorne was a stand out in the IBL but was he a top tier guy there? (I really don't know, I don't follow the IBL at all) Anyone who is big on the IBL want to comment on if he was dominant there? Ken?

Randy Gill was a 3rd team all PBL player and played point for one of the worst teams record-wise in the league. 17/4/4 are good stats but are they enough to consider him one of the top five guys signed so far? (to be fair, I am not sure who else is better. Is that a sad statement about where teams are when it comes to signing talent?)

I haven't seen these guys play so I don't know, but from what I can gather neither of them are particularly great.

Just by looking at Randy Gill's stats he looks like a chucker.

watching Gill play when the Maryland Knighthawks visited the Xplosion(when we were in the ABA). I was very impressed with him. His only downfall was a missed a free throw(which he is ordinarily good at) which allowed the X to win that game by just three points. But I can tell you, he is good!

For the last four years, stateside (and combining regular and playoff stats) his stats are:

Maryland ABA 2004-05 20 gms, 87-194 44.8% fg, 26-31 83.9% ft, 60-149 40.3% 3g, 260 pts, 13.0 avg
Maryland ABA 2005-06 22 gms, 111-283 39.2% fg, 37-45 82.2% ft, 66-170 38.8% 3g, 325 pts, 14.8 avg
Maryland ABA 2006-07 26 gms, 152-349 43.6% fg, 41-46 89.1% ft, 83-206 40.3% 3g, 428 pts, 16.5 avg
Okla City CBA 2007-08 4 gms, 20-48 41.7% fg, 3-3 100% ft, 9-21 42.9% 3g, 52 pts, 13.0 avg
Maryland PBL 2007-08 15 gms, 88-232 37.9% fg, 33-38 86.8% ft, 48-130 36.9% 3g, 257 pts, 17.1 avg

My knock on Gill is that he has a shoot first mentality and doesn't distribute the ball much. I know he is a shooting guard but even when he is ice cold, he doesn't modify his game and still keeps launching 35 footers.

Anthony Anderson was MVP in the... ABA! but Anthony is a great player.

This one clear that none of the best current players signed in the PBL will go to the NBA and first leagues overseas (Europe)

I have no beef with the IBL, and that's not what I meant. I just said what league he played in, I didn't make any judgment about it. The IBL has a lot of very good minor league players.

My question is: Was he a top tier guy in the league in whiched he played? Did he take over games? Or was he just okay?

edit: It's just that his stats are good, but not convincing. He was the best player on a 6-12 team, and while he was fifth in the IBL in scoring he didn't crack the top ten in either of the other major categories. So his available stats are sparse and inconclusive. I am just asking if other people think that he is, in fact, a dominant player.

What I have from the IBL are basically league scoring summaries. I do have one stat line from a game against Battle Creek (#192, 6/24/08), a 107-144 loss:

Gm R A PTS
004 6 6 15 (138-95 W over USA AS)
010 9 1 23 (138-115 W over USA AS)
024 - - 27 (108-119 L to Windy City)
028 - - 19 (126-139 L to Holland)
037 2 2 17 (134-166 L to Holland)
062 6 5 32 (124-133 L to Battle Creek)
077 4 3 24 (111-108 W over Gary)
090 5 2 16 (128-116 L to Battle Creek)
106 3 8 24 (111-108 W over Elgin)
123 2 1 35 (144-152 L to Elkhart)
128 4 6 30 (141-143 L to Portland)
130 6 5 15 (127-109 W over Shanxi)
136 12 5 40 (147-141 W over C Oregon)
143 10 2 49 (129-131 L to Vancouver)
164 5 6 21 (111-124 L to Edmonton)

38 min, 10-19 fg, 5-7 ft, 5-11 3fg, 2-2-4 Reb, 3 ast, 3 bs, 6 to, 1 bs, 1 st, 30 pts

I also have some of his River Catz and Impact stats.

I just read on another thread the players that the Wizards are planning to sign. If they do, then those players would destroy a team consisting of your top 5 in PBL. It would not be a contest. Also, why are we evenb takling about Willie Mitchell? He was not not even the best player on his team last year!

But since they won't be playing in the PBL, we won't worry about it.

I think Cedric McGinnis has to be 3rd or 4th on that list now that he's back with Wilmington.

Is this ranking based on ability OR all being an all around player (ability, attitude and role model). If it is all around player then Cedric (The Ref Pusher) McGinnis would be #67 and Robert (Short Fuse) Sanders would be #56. IMO

I would drop Randy Gill off the rankings, then the list would look pretty good to me.

Top 3 agreed by consensus enough seems... Waiting for Eric Crookshank

Looking more for talent in the next players signed in the PBL (in my opinion)

Thanks

I think it's hard to argue about that top three.

I think another interesting question is who are the best PBL/ABA players from last year not currently signed to a team? Off the top of my head:
Jeremy Bell
Eric Crookshank
Tommy Mitchell

I don't know the PBL rosters from last year very well at all, though.

Tommy Mitchell

I heard from him this summer and he was planning on playing overseas rather than with either of the two Montreal teams.

The best two players in the PBL last season was Ryan Edwards and Bobby Anderson, both were on Quad cities. Ryan is currently overseas, and Bobby I have no idea where he is at, but he has a lot of talent!
