La Marque grad signs with Texas City Rangers
By Joshua Buckley

TEXAS CITY — Adrian Mack is coming home. The La Marque grad signed to play for the newly formed Texas City Rangers of the American Basketball Association, which begins play in December. Has he checked out the list of current teams on abalive? They ain't there...
Mack had been playing with the Harlem Stars entertainment basketball team since last October.
“The ABA is the league just below the NBA,” Mack said. “My goal is to get to the NBA, and I feel like me taking this next step is the way to get to that point.” It is just below the NBA in the way the sidewalk is just below the observation deck of the Empire State Building...
Mack was a three-year letterman at La Marque as a member of the football team. But when he began attending Texas Southern University, Mack opted to spend his free time playing basketball.
After playing in several all-star games, Mack was recruited by the Stars last fall. Mack said he averaged almost 18 points for the team.
“Playing for the Stars was great for my career because it was the first professional team I signed with,” Mack said. “It got my name out there a little more.”
Mack said he intends to become a leader for the Rangers in their first season.
“I’m going to do what the coach wants out of a point guard,” Mack said. “It’s going to be a fun season. I can’t wait.”
If there is a season at all...
Another clueless soul, attached to Joe's folly...
He averaged 18 points a game for the Harlem Stars....That's not so great when you consider that they were probably playing the faculty team from the local high school...on donkeys...
But, at least he has stats...that's more than most of the players in the ABA last year have!

Yes, but the Starzs are now partners with the American Basketball Association, as can be seen further down their webpage.
There's a press release about them joining up with the ABA ... but upon clicking the link, one discovers it is a dead link.
Pfft.
All that means is that this guy "claims" he scored 18 points for the Harlem Stars. There's no proof of this other than this guy's verbal claim to have accomplished this. By that argument, anything that Joe Newman spews out of his pie-hole should be taken as the gospel truth.
Yeah right. The only time you can tell if Joe Newman is telling the truth is if his lips aren't moving.

the article also says he played college football and basketball in his spare time. I hope things work out for the young man but playing basketball in your spare time is not a proven path to the NBA.
He won't have much spare time in the ABA either. He'll be holding down a f/t job outside of the ABA team if he wants little things like food, a roof over his head, medical insurance, clothes etc.

I wouldn't give Joe any ideas.
First.............Foodstamps will become a staple part of an ABA players diet. They'll be stapled to the paycheck, if they get a paycheck.
Then...........Joe will arrange overnight stays at homeless shelters for teams on the road.
Pretty soon ..........we'll see the Winnipeg Wino's" come into the league a team full of homeless people. They'll sell merchandise directly from the Salvation Army.

...and even that would be a stolen idea.

Other than the 3-D rule (which I like), Joe has a long history of ideas that are either stolen from somewhere else and passed off as his own, or dreamed up by him that never see their way to fruition.
Would this really surprise anyone?

Texas City Rangers To Play In Aba This Season
November 17, 2008 - American Basketball Association (ABA) Texas City Rangers
Indianapolis, IN. The American Basketball Association (ABA) today announced that the Texas City Rangers, originally scheduled to play this season but moved recently to 2009 because of the devastation caused by Hurricane Ike to this great Texas community, will in fact play this season. According to Joe Newman, ABA CEO, "Markeith Brown had everything set for a great season until Hurricane Ike. The damage was severe and the thought was that it would be impossible to put things back together. But the people of Texas City (the entire East Texas area in fact), are very tough, very resilient and very eager to return to normal life as quickly as possible. Markeith has stepped up and put things back together - and will play. We are very pleased and also very supportive. The community really deserves high quality sports and entertainment at affordable prices - and the Texas City Rangers will supply that and much more."
"We are thankful to the other teams in the division for their willingness to change around their schedules so that we can have this opportunity," added Brown. "I know that it was difficult for them as the season is almost upon us. But they've made our staff and players very happy and have given our community something really good to look forward to. Thanks to all of you. We won't let you down." For more information, visit www.texascityrangers.com or www.abalive.com or email markeithb@gmail.com.
The website has no info - including a venue - and lists Markeith Brown as on the active roster.

So....wait a minute.
Katrina was blamed on franchise failures from Louisiana to (seemingly) Calgary.
And yet, here's an example of a team that was off, then on, then off, and now on despite a hurricane?
Would you get your freaking story straight, Joe?
