Man, I never thought I'd write those words... until I came across this little press release:

Indianapolis, IN. The American Basketball Association (ABA) today announced that it will add a new feature, FROM THE ABA CEO, to its exciting new website, www.abalive.com. According to Joe Newman, ABA CEO, "It seems like that everytime something happens in sports, I receive a lot of emails asking for comments. So, this season, we decided to do away with the Ask the CEO column as we will be adding many fan interactive features in the coming weeks, and instead I'll comment on things of interest. The first one will be ABA: MORE THAN JUST A GAME. Here's a sample.

So in other words, the whole fiction of "Letter from Purlie in Utica" has finally been excised, most likely because nobody really bothered to send him anything other than requests from Nigerian princes for American bank account information.

When Dick Tinkham and I co-founded the ABA, our mission was to bring exciting, high-qualityu professional basketball to fans at affordable prices.

Take a drink.

It was also to give quality players a place to play, quiality coaches a chance to coach at the professional level and to open opportunities for officials to referee on a professional level.

Can't be sure if it's from the transition from Joe's computer to OSC's server, but the word "quality" is misspelled twice. That's a good indication that the Gwizzlies are still in the ABA.

Two other things. We wanted to bring sportsmanship, responsibility and community involvement back into the game and to have team ownerships with true diversity.

Sportsmanship and responsibility. Was this before or after the Sally Anthony incident? Community involvement - was that before or after the Hawaii Hurricanes incident?

That's why our motto is More than Just A Game.

Because "a game" is what Joe pulls on you - sort of the equivalent of pulling the wool over your eyes.

The economy has been hardhit. From Wall Street to Main Street, no one seems to be immune from it.

Must mean that those $10,000 entrance fees are getting harder to come by, eh Joe?

The current financial crisis illustrates that the cost of essential goods and services has been seriously overpriced and that goes for major leaguie sports like the NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL. The idea of season tickets costing $5000 and more is ridiculous; the idea of an average price of $80+ per ticket plus high priced concessions and parking is ridiculous.

Yeah, because the idea of season tickets costing $25,000 or more in Hawaii is perfectly normal, right Joe?

Not when the average fan faces layoffs, downsizing, loss of savings, foreclosures, high energy prices and other hardships.

Yeah, because outside of Holliday Drive it's all Damnation Alley, ain't it Joe?

If our mission of bringing exciting, high-quality professional basketball to fans at affordable prices was important then, it is more important than ever now. Starting in December, nearly 40 teams, from Alaska to the Bahamas, from New York to Arizona, from Montreal to Texas, from California to North Carolina and many places in between, fans will be able to see exciting professional basketball at ticket prices of $5, $10 and $15 and in most cases with free parking, low concession prices and a league employing nearly 500 players, over 100 coaches, over 300 referees - and each team making a major impact in it community with programs for Boys & Girls Clubs, YMCA's, schools, youth groups, churches, neighborhood shelters, hospitals and others. The ABA is MORE THAN JUST A GAME. And we are proud to say that nearly 70% of the teams are owned by African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians and women - diversity unlike any other professional sports league in history.

Ah, the usual Joe Newman fuzzy math. Pandering by claiming it hires more minorities than any other league. Promising tickets as cheap as $5 per seat - I think there are some teams in Kentucky who might be surprised at your low-balling prices, Joe. As for a league employing 500 players, 100 coaches, 300 referees, Joe's working off the old formula that (ABA team = 12 players, 3 coaches). So if a minivan shows up and 6 players and one coach climb out 5 minutes before tip-off, does this mean tickets are now half-price?

The ABA was founded for the fans...and at a time when you need it most...we're here and ready to go!

Too bad you haven't "gone" yet, Joe. Oh well. In any case, welcome to the world of the mean-spirited bloggers, Joe. We all knew you couldn't resist being one of us.

But a word of warning - you can't be Mean-Spirited Blogger #7. That's me, binky.

"It seems like that everytime something happens in sports, I receive a lot of emails asking for comments."

Most of them are from my invisible friend, Horatio.

That's why our motto is More than Just A Game.

Because, in reality, a basketball game isn't really as important as little rox, non-descript auction sites, ring tones, concert tours and other infomercial-quality products.

The league does not employ players and coaches, the individual teams may employ players and coaches!

Seems to me that this league exists as a venue for Joe to sell Little Rox, airline tix on abatravel and other assorted non-startering business ventures.

The actual basketball is a distant second to the real goal of a quasi-MLM empire.

Sort of like on this board, basketball takes a distant second to the 24-7-Joe-talk.
