I'm hardly an expert on the area, but from what I can tell;
1- The Long Beach Jam won last year's ABA championship, but in the offseason, strongly considered not returning to the league.
2- The Jam's championship-winning coach, Earl Cureton, and most of the players from the Jam's championship team signed with the expansion Orange County Crush for this season.
3- The Crush franchise collapsed after playing 10 games (9 of which they won); the Jam, playing just above .500 ball, saw the opportunity to bring back many of the players who won them a championship last year, and did so, requiring them to release some of their current players.
Hope this helps.
