TAKING A PASS: Fred and Jeff Wilpon met with officials from the start-up United Football League, which is planning to debut in the fall of 2009 in six cities. But the Mets' owners have decided to pass on owning a New York franchise and have it use Citi Field, according to team insiders. Commissioner Michael Huyghue, a former senior VP with the Jacksonville Jaguars, had identified the Wilpons as being on board with the league in an SI.com report. A Mets official suggested the dimensions of Citi Field would allow for pro football, but they weren't interested in compromising the Mets' field conditions in a league that may have regular-season games as early as August.

So if they want a team in NY they will have to look elsewhere.

If not Citi Field, then maybe Wien Stadium at Columbia University or Shuart Stadium at Hofstra University?

If not those two, then how about Michie Stadium at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, NY (which is about 55 miles north of Manhattan)?

Rutgers Stadium in Piscataway, NJ anyone? Or maybe the new Red Bull Arena near Newark?
