Asheville Altitude sponsors Dodgeball World Cup

The Asheville Altitude and the International Dodgeball Federation (IDBF) have teamed up to present the 2005 Dodgeball World Cup, April 9, 2005, 2 p.m., at the Asheville Civic Center.

This event is part of a great sports double-header, as it will be followed by the Altitude’s regular season ending game against the Huntsville Flight. Tickets are good for both events.

“We are excited to have this special cross-promotional opportunity. The generous help from the Altitude as the primary sponsor our first ever Dodgeball World Cup is another demonstration of their commitment to sports in Western North Carolina,” said Dennis Justice, North Carolina Commissioner of the IDBF, and organizer of the Dodgeball World Cup.

“Asheville is a unique city, and is the perfect host for this unique event. I hope that people in Western North Carolina come out and support us.”

(Please contact Mr. Justice on all dodgeball matters at (828) 681-0391.)

The IDBF, based in Gulfport, Mississippi, was founded by Rusty Walker in 1998. Their website is www.dodge-ball.com.

It is IDBF’s commitment to make dodgeball an Olympic sport. Following the success of the movie “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story,” the second highest grossing sports comedy of all time, dodgeball leagues and tournaments have been forming in Black Mountain, all over the country, and the world. The IDBF has recently added federations in Australia, Pakistan, and Puerto Rico. Asheville Altitude President Rudy Bourg has even played dodgeball with the ultra-safe IDBF balls in dodgeball matches in his home state of Louisiana.

“What dodgeball needs is an event that demonstrates how it could be displayed in an arena setting,” said Justice. “Our future hopes are to have the event involved with the Bele Chere music festival, once the Civic Center’s long-term needs are addressed.”

Entry fee is $200 per team for this eight-team tournament. First place is a winner-take-all prize of $1,000, and the Dodgeball World Cup. First seven entrants are guaranteed a spot. A qualifier tournament for the eighth and final spot will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2005, at a location to be announced.

The long term goal of this annual event is to get teams from literally around the world to compete. However, if people from other countries wish to represent their country in this year’s event, they are strongly encouraged to enter.

There will also be a meeting for individuals who wish to start leagues or tournaments in North Carolina, for parks and recreation departments, churches, YMCA’s, etc.

Sponsorship and group ticket sale packages are now available. Schools, churches, and other groups should ask for the $7 per ticket special. Tickets cover both the Dodgeball World Cup and the Asheville Altitude’s regular season ending game against the Huntsville Flight.

Group tickets can be ordered through Mr. Justice, or by simply calling Patricia Porter at the Altitude office at (828) 782-1004.

The event is coordinated by a partnership of UpFront Management Sports and wncsport.com.
