In case anyone cares, the new Peoria football team name is the Roughriders. I'm not sure if I like it or not. What do you think? :?

I know what you mean. It will be really hard to call them by a new name. I think they waited to make the announcement until today, since you had to have your season tickets renewed by 12/31. They probably figured a lot of people wouldn't renew if they knew what the name was going to be. We've been going to the games since the beginning, and will continue to go. Mostly to support the players that return, and because we have so much fun at the games. Did you renew your tickets?

I'm originally from Peoria, but live in Kansas now. I've seen the Pirates play two games - one against our local team when they were in the NIFL (the year Peoria won the title) and then I saw a game last year as well. Even this far away, Peoria won't be Peoria without the Pirates.
FYI, I have season tickets to our local indoor football league.

It's going to be interesting to see how many people actually come back this year. They have lost so many fans over the last few years, it's sad. We went to the championship game last year in Ft. Myers and it was a blast! Too bad they couldn't have won.
I'm glad that they are going back to the old rules. That will make it a lot better.

Perhaps this is the move they needed to jumpstart the game in Peoria once again?

I remember my first game in Peoria....Man the place was packed!! I was impressed with the crowd. I do have to admit there weren't as many there last season. Hopefully Peoria will bounce back!! I wish them the best of luck!

Thanks for sharing the website address. I wonder if they will broadcast any of the away games this year on the radio. We really enjoyed listening to them. This year we have dsl, so I was hoping to get the video feed...guess that won't be happening.

I think it is pretty lame to take the name of a former IFL team that the Pirates played against....
This is the beginning of the end of the Pirates/Roughriders.
Watch out on March 17 when you come to Dayton
LOL!
Seriously... My Warbirds will have their work cut out for them to be ready for one of the Class of the league.

Wasn't "Pirates" unavailable because af2 was jealously clinging onto it for dear life?
Did Peoria have any real options?
(Insert the "biding time until joining the CFL" crack here)

Bismarck was the Blaze in the IFL, they became the Roughriders a couple years later when they returned in the NIFL.

That's true about the af2 denying Peoria the name "Pirates". Something about them thinking they might come back someday. I hope not! They even tried to lay claim to our team colors. I hope the UIF league has their you know what together, so we can keep this team for a long time. The UIF/IFL have better rules anyway....more like regular football. Can't wait until spring!

You can understand where af2 is coming from. They paid for all the names, logos, etc. when they bought the IFL. Regardless of whether or not they can use them, they're not going to simply give any of their property away to a competitor. I think every other league would do the same thing if they also owned the names and logos.

I agree...
Course... With hindsight... It's easy to wonder exactly what the folks over at OPE were thinking when they bought the whole IFL... Considering only Peoria and Lincoln came into AF2 with their nicknames intact... And only one other city (Wichita) came into the AF2.. And they're all gone...
You think it was squelching the competition?... Or that they figured they would have interested owners coming out of the woodwork to retain the "logo's" and "nicknames" OH ya.. And plopping down the 1/2 a million...
To be honest.. I miss the days of the IFL bantering on this board... Now it's more everyone holding their breath hoping that their team isn't the next one to go by the wayside... I'll keep my Wichita Stealth as my avatar... At least until Kansas City gets "any" indoor team or Wichita returns on the scene with a team... somewhere.. I have my "rathers" on where it would be... But already missing indoor football since my Chiefs have had their tee-times already set up for a while...
Oh well.. Back on Topic... lol
Hopefully Peoria has taken the Roughriders nickname like Saskatchewan and not the Rough Riders like Ottawa... Don't ask me why I prefer it that way.. The nickname pool must be getting dry... lol Still.. At least St. Charles/St. Louis has changed their name...

why was the name changed from Mutineers to roughRiders??

The speculation is that Mutineers was too close to Pirates. They had to go with a whole new name and color scheme to keep OPE & AF2 off their backs.

THere was a lot of complaints about the name. The Peoria newspaper even had nicknames based on the name the day after it was announced. (ie. Mutant Ears)

Did they buy the Iniforms from the Bismarck Roughriders ? And If so, I have a couple of helmets if they want some extra.

I am from Virginia and my boyfriend currently plays on the Rough Rider's team! I am excited and can't wait to see him and the team in action. As far as the name goes, it's the only one I've ever known since I didn't know they existed until January of this year. I had not heard of Peoria until then either. What I can say is this: from the things he tells me and the dialogue I hear when I am on the phone with him, it seems like they have a "tight" squad. Everyone works hard and helps eachother out. I think they will go far this season!!! GO KLJ!!! :P
