It's in Las Vegas. Why ? Its not like LV has one of the more ABA stable franchises ? I like Newmans' comment on having the leagues All Star Game in Las Vegas. Newman says, "will give fans a chance to see what the ABA is all about and why the league has grown as it has." Say What ? Having no more than relatives and players' girlfriends at most sites in the stands is growth ? Shouldn't the game be played at a site where they've supported ABA ball ?

You're forgetting one important fact: Joe Newman is a crazy old man.

He's already accepted 40 expansion teams for next year. Okay, sure, Joe. Whatever. Will 10 of those 40 actually start next season (if there is one) and will 4 survive?

"We might lose 3 or 4" this year. You've already lost 3 or 4 haven't you?

What's worse than Joe's ramblings is the lazy-ass reporters who just parrot back what he says without doing even a modicum of research to see that he's full of it.

Yeah, just good.

When the ABA gets a few of their most successful franchises leaving to form their own league, then I'll change my stance. :-P

The ABA website says the All-Star Game has been rescheduled from Sunday, Feb. 13 to Monday, Feb. 14. This was done, among other reasons, to allow the game a "better audience" both nationally and internationally (this is according to Joe Newman).

The story notes that one of the game's organizers is pleased the game is moved to the 14th because it also happens to be Valentine's Day. Hmmm, what a great way to spend Valentine's Day with your loved one -- snuggling up in front of the TV trying to find the ABA All-Star Game.

Not.

Excuse me?

Who moves a game from a weekend to a weekday "to allow the game a better audience?"

Does Joe STILL not realize that weekends are....hel-LO?...BETTER for attendance?

Oh, wait, this is Newman we're talking about. He's simply lying.

Simply, completely and utterly lying.

So, will anyone here be heading to LV to see the ABA's All-Star festivities? If anyone does, please try to get a snapshot of Joe Newman. I'm dying to see what this guy looks like! (I'm imaging something like a used car salesman, but I hope I'm wrong.)

Awile back there was a picture of him on the abalive home page. A used car salesman would be a good way to describe him. I'm pretty sure that's a rug on his dome. If not, his barber makes Trump's look good.

I flip flop on which he looks more like. It's either "Honest" Joe, the used car salesman who only sells cars driven by little old ladies to church on Sundays, or "Crazy" Joe, that uncle who shows up at every family function, has a few too many "beverages", and makes a total a$$ out of himself. Take your pick. :? :? :?

No, I think "Honest" Joe is a used furniture salesman who is looking to give you the highest price lowest made crap on the market.

Why should Utah send any representatives to the ABA all*star game? What's in it for them?

Fans have to pay $25-$30 per person for pre all star games activities. Who collects any proceeds made? The so-called Las Vegas franchise owner? Joe Newman? Who?

The decision by Utah makes perfectly good sense to me.

And yet, Ashley Mac should have just done what her boss said, just because.

Inconsistency, anyone?

From what I have been told, the ABA is making the teams subsidize the travel costs of their players and coaches to the game in Vegas. I know of at least one coach not going out there for that reason.

TEN, you wouldn't be a GM of a team in the ABA or USBL would you? Because there wa sa guy by the name of Tom on the USBL forum. Just wondering.

Well then it makes perfect sense.

But I thought it was pretty cheap to go to Vegas. Another reason for having it there.

Shouldn't $300,000 or so in expansion fees be able to subsidize their travel?

Here we go again with the Joe Newman trying to spin gold out of any situation. In his press releases naming the all-star teams he says that Utah and Long Beach choose not to submit considerations for the all-star game so that they could concentrate on the playoffs. Does this twit really believe this theory and is he that delusional or is he just blowing more smoke? I sometimes think he might not be a con artist, but that his rug is growing into his head and draining his brain!
I guess we won't be seeing Shaq, Dirk, KG, Duncan and many others in the NBA all star game this year as they will probobly be concentrating on the playoffs as well. Makes a lot of sense.

I have not yet figured out if Joe believes the bs that he spews out or if he has the best poker face this side of Michael Madsen.

But when you've been spinning as long as he has, I guess you get pretty good at it.

"Come see the ABA All-Stars, minus some of the best players in the league. Did I mention it's on a Monday? Valentine's Day? When you probably don't have anything else to do? So all you geeks who can't get dates, come on out to the game."

I cannot believe that after playing as many games as any other team in the league that Nashville only had one player on the East roster for the game, and that was the league's leading scorer as an alternate! Granted he hasn't been heard from lately, but I have seen this Nashville team play 4 times and they are better than 1 player being an alternate.

By the way it's Brian Jackson, not Bruce. And while he deserves recognition Shawnson Johnson is equally if not more deserving of the honors as well.

The Rim Rockers will beat Utah on 2/12 and should win the title.

As long as you're NOT staying over on Saturday night, Vegas is relatively cheap... though each new project demands more dosh than the last one.

Does explain a lot, no?

Perhaps if you agreed to go to the All-Star Game, you had to sit in the middle seat on the airplane with Sally Anthony on one side and Carrot Top on the other and nobody thought it was worth it so they all declined the invitation.

Watching the ABA All-Star Game on Valentine's Day? Yeah, I can see guys across the country telling their significant others, "Sorry, Honey, we're going to have to postpone our Valentine's dinner date -- the ABA All-Star Game is on tonight!"

Uncle Joe is truly reaching new depths of delusion.

Doesn't matter - it's unlikely that most guys live within five miles of the low power TV stations that the ABA games are on.

Unless, of course, they live in Africa. In which case it'll be early morning on the 15th, won't it?

dshaw62197

Wow! According to the ABA website, Uncle Joe's got quite an weekend of entertainment planned for the all-star game. Take a look at the line up:

http://www.abalive.com/news/releases/?newsid=2005020406003

The only thing I can't figure out is why the major networks won't be covering this extravaganza...

Of course, Uncle Joe will be rather upset if most of the perfomers scheduled decline to attend, so that they can focus on winning the Grammies instead...

Observations:
Master P is a sometime ABA player, and Lil'Romeo is his son. Roy Jones, as I recall, is a former USBL owner and actually played a little ball for his team; don't know if he has ABA ties.
Joe seems to love Vegas; this is the only explanation I can see for the All-Star game being hosted by a franchise that plays to crowds of 76 people. I would choose a city where league games are better-attended.
Dontae is now playing in Korea, so I doubt he will be at this game, but if his name was going to be mentioned at all, it should have been as a starter, not an alternate. One problem with Rhythm all-stars is that the 4 best players who have played in a Rhythm uniform this year (Jones, Sonn, Odell Bradley, Freije) are either no longer with the team or injured.
Despite this, I think Terrance VanLier and/or Kyle Gribble should have merited some consideration. Terrance, especially, played at an All-Star level once Jones was not available.

Well, well... here it is, the day after the ABA All-Star game. Did anyone see it? Hear it? Did it actually take place? How many players actually showed up?

I can see it now... "Because of travel problems the ABA All-Star Game has been cancelled. However, Joe Newman proclaimed the event a 'complete success' and said the ABA is planning to have 3 all-star games next season."

Well word in the Las Vegas Review Journal is the game was played and the west beat the east 163-149 at the Las Vegas Sports Park. Can someone correct me if I'm wrong, but from my travels to Vegas, that sports park is actually a former sports themed amusement park that is actually out of business with go carts and a mini baseball park, correct? The Review Journal did note that Roy Jones, Jr. the boxer was scheduled to play as the celebrity 11th man, but did not show up. No word on if a crowd did either!

I bet they are keeping it under wraps because "Crazy" Joe probably found 8 new teams for next year in the LV area and will hit us up with that news in the next couple of days. All teams will play on a used roller rink or parking lots at the local brothels.

Does anyone else find it odd that "Crazy Joe" (I like that name!!!) quit hyping the All Star Game after a week or so, didn't attend the game and didn't acknowledge the game? I am wondering what is going on behind the scenes.

Maybe Utah and Long Beach did not send representatives to the ABA all*star game because they anticipated the absence of post all*star game coverage.

Most likely they were tired of being scammed.

What IS the status of that ABA/ESPN deal anyway? I caught the AHL all*star game (same night as the ABA all*star game) on ESPN instead. Planet USA won in a shoot-out, by the way.

Also, what's the status of the nationwide ABA radio network game of the week? Isn't the guy who brought us this grand lie, Gary Nice, now an ABA franchise holder?

Yeah, yeah! Some of the teams are trying to do things right. Some of the teams are victims of a scam, in my opinion. They should have seen it coming.

200 "fans" to the all-star game!? I guess that explains why they haven't said a word about it on the league site. Imagine what the crowd would have been like if they had done something crazy, like leave it on a weekend. They probably would have only had 20 or so. Nothing says "I love you" more on Valentine's Day than getting together with 198 other like minded individuals to watch a sham league play its sham all-star game at an abandonded roller rink, or whatever that place is.

Sam Hill

When they moved the game, Joe said:

"There were several considerations including the ability to have the game televised nationally and internationally."

Anybody see the game on TV? Anywhere? Anybody know anybody in Africa who watched it?

Good God. What a fiasco. Houston, thanks for posting the link. Info on the ABA All-Star Game has been scarce to none. Now I think I understand why. Still, I'm surprised Uncle Joe didn't make up some half-arsed press release saying the game was a resounding success and was enjoyed by millions of fans worldwide.

I'm torn between wanting to see this league get put out of its misery or hoping it lasts a little longer to see what new nonsense Joe dreams up.

I guess this pile of dung All Star Game (???) was too much of a fiasco for even "Crazy Joe" to cover up with his endless pile of dung superlative-laced press releases. This league is such a joke that I can't laugh anymore.

What is sad? "Crazy Joe" and "Rico the Ripoff" continue to sell more and more franchises to more and more unsuspecting people that actually believe you can make millions by buying a franchise for $20,000 (if you don't negotiate the fee downward) and by running it on a shoestring budget. Joe and Rico are not only scamming these people out of $20,000, but they are enticing them to lose $100,000s more and to screw vendors and employees out of $100,000s more. They don't care about the success of owners or the vendors and employees that contribute to the success of owners. If they did, "Crazy Joe" wouldn't say that he has 30-40 people that would take over a franchise in 6 seconds (or is it 6 people that would take over a franchise in 30-40 seconds) everytime they got into trouble. Instead, he would say that he would work with the franchise to make the situation right. Better yet, he would actually do his homework and make sure that the owners that he brings into the ABA wouldn't get in trouble.

When will it end? Does anyone have Elliot Spitzer's number?
