Ottawa baseball fans were treated to two good games on the weekend against the Brockton Rox. Saturday's game was a pitching duel between Orlando Trias and Rolando Viera. Trias lasted seven innings allowing just two runs on seven hits while Viera pitched five innings allowing five hits and leaving the game tied at two.
Both starters excelled as did the relievers on both teams. The outcome was not decided until the ninth when Tony Gonzalez doubled to lead off the inning. He made it to third on a groundout, After two outs, Dominic Ramos walked. Ramos second, his 13th of the year, and Gonzalez scored when catcher Kyle Geiger's throw ended in center field making it an unearned run. Jerry Dunn closed the door on the Rapidz for his ninth save as Brockton won 3-2.
On Sunday afternoon, Greg Bunn pitched seven strong innings allowing only two runs - one each in the first two innings - on six hits and was the winner over the Rox 9-2. Bunn's performance shaved over two points on his ERA, earned his first win of the year and showing he can help the Rapidz win. He also struck out a personal season best six hitters in his longest outing so far.
The Rapidz tied the score 2-2 in the second and kept tacking on runs in different ways. In the fourth, they took advantage of a Brockton error although they did run themselves out of a potentially bigger inning. In the fifth, after a Pirman single, he was sacrificed by Lemieux before Jose de Los Santos' double. In the sixth, Jose Salas hit his first home run of the year, a two-run shot. Finally, Ottawa loaded the bases on three singles to start the seventh. Jabe Bergeron and Felix Escalona then drove in runs with sacrifice flies. Jereme Milons added another run in that inning with a single.
It was the largest Ottawa crowd of the season, and seventh largest in the Can-Am this season. In fact, the Rapidz have been involved in six of the eleven largest crowds in the league, three of them in Ottawa.
Tonight (Monday), the Rapidz have a chance to win two games in a row for the first time as well as win their first series ever against the Rox. A good crowd is expected for Canada Eve Day and a fireworks display after the game. Wayne Lundgren should be the starter for the Rox and likely Fraser Robinson for the Rapz.
