Rapidz 11 Tornadoes 8Things did not look good for the Rapidz after the Tornadoes were done in the fourth inning and leading 6-0. It appeared they were heading towards their eighth straight loss. But baseball is a game where it's not over until the 27th out is made.
The Rapidz started their biggest comeback ever in the bottom of the fourth. Jabe Bergeron walked which was followed by a Kyle Geiger single. With Bergeron on third base, Pete Pirman drove him in with a sacrifice fly. A single and a walk later, the bases were loaded with one out for Jared Lemieux who promptly put the next pitch over the right field wall. Ottawa was just one run behind.
Worcester got that run back in the sixth, an unearned one and were leading 7-5. But the Rapidz did not roll over and die. They tied the game at seven with two runs of their own in the sixth. Jared Lemieux was a key part in setting it up when, with a men on first and second, he was asked to sacrifice. Unfortunately for the Tornadoes, the ball was just out of reach of starting pitcher Junior Guerrero. He reached the ball but could not throw to first. Ottawa now had the bases loaded for the second straight inning, this time with nobody out. A run scored on a De los Santos double play and another on Juan Infante's single.
The Tornadoes went ahead 8-7 in the seventh on three consecutive singles. But Ottawa took the lead for good by scoring three of their own in that same inning. Again, a sacrifice bunt attempt was a factor, this time by Pirman. Worcester's first baseman committed an error which allowed a run to score. The Rapidz added another final run in the eighth inning to make it 11-8.
In all, Worcester collected 14 hits. Only two starters did not get hits, Alex Trezza, who did drive in two runs with a sacrifice fly and a fielder's choice, and Rico Santana who struck out three times, twice looking. Francisco Carabello opened the scoring in the second inning with a home run. B.J. Weed went 3-for-5 and Mike MacMillan 3-for-4 and a walk.
The Rapidz on the other hand collected 12 hits. Only two of their hitters also failed to get hits, Pete Pirman who drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and was part of the play that tied the score 8-8 in the seventh. Maxime Bouchard went 0-for-2 with two walks. Escalona had three hits and a RBI.
Noel Baca was credited with the win while Jake Ociesa took the loss. The win ended Ottawa's seven-game losing streak before they undertake a six-game road trip on Tuesday in Brockton and Worcester. Tuesday is former Rox manager Ed Nottle bobblehead giveaway night.
A nice win for the Rapidz coming back from a six-run deficit. Attendance was 1912 on a hot, muggy Sunday afternoon.
