Another good effort by an Ottawa starting pitcher, another loss.
Last night's game was pretty much decided after the first inning. Ottawa could not afford to let Worcester get ahead early or by many runs going against Matt Weagle but that is just what happened.
It was not all starter Fraser Robinson's fault however. After one out in the first, Juan Infante threw away a Scott Grimes grounder. Robinson did give up a walk to Colabello and a double to Carabello to score a run but there was also an error by Escalona on the play. One out and another double later, the Tornadoes were ahead 3-0, all three runs unearned.
Meanwhile, Ottawa was able to put some men on base but the next hitter always seemed to hit into a double play. In fact, Worcester turned four double plays on this night. This same Worcester team set the league record just last year with five double plays in one game.
Sambu Ndungidi played in his first game in about a week and went 2-for-3 and drove in the second Ottawa run in the seventh. Sambu was hitting .042 before the game and raised it to .111 with his two-hit night. Jared Lemieux hit in the number nine slot. Pete Pirman had a bad night striking out looking and hitting in two double plays.
Once again, the offense took some time to get going as the Rapz got their first hit in the fifth. Escalona was the offensive star of the day with two hits and a walk. Kyle Geiger collected his fifth double of the season. He was thinking of turning it into his second triple of the season but thought better of it once rounding second.
The Tornadoes collected seven hits but only three after the second inning. Ottawa also scattered seven hits and committed two errors, both in the first heavily contributing to Worcester's three runs in that inning.
Manager Ed Nottle was ejected in the eighth. After De los Santos walked to lead off the inning, Juan Infante appeared to have beaten out the tail end of a double play. In fact, the umpire signaled safe. It did indeed appear that Infante was safe. However, the decision was changed and Infante was declared out. That's when Nottle came out to argue and was promptly given the heave ho.
Weagle, now 4-0, was the winner, Robinson the loser (0-1) and John Birtwell earned his second save of the season.
Probables for tonight: Eddie Pena (2-0) against Ottawa native Mike Kusiewicz (0-3).
