View Full Version : New England Surge runs a good shown

I normally post on the ABA board here but yesterday went to the NE Surge v Flint Phantoms game and was impressed.

I've poked around these boards and kind of reserved judgement about the CIFL. I was waiting to see if this was NIFL version 2.0 or if it was a legit operation. My impression was the CIFL runs a fairly good set up, at least in Worcester.

When I first showed up the NE players were warming up and I wandered down to the dasher boards and asked one of the players if

" you guys getting paid?"

he kind of mis-understood and said

"ya man, we're a professional team"

so I said,

" no no, theres a guy on the internet who said you aren't getting paid and the teams missing checks "

his response was

" no dog, that bulls****, our owner is also our coach, he's stand up,"

Later on, another player came over to where I was and he must have talked to the first player and said

"hey n****r, its all good on this team, we doing fine, don't believe that internet, that guys just stirring it up"

Now as a white male it was the first time I've ever been called a n****r but just to put this into context it was at the very start when they opened the doors and the Phantoms were already on the field, the Surge came out. There were no kids where I was leaning over and nobody heard any swearing, also the players were nice about things, they weren't angry or being jerks about it, the responses were good natured.

The Surge certainly is far better run than anything I've ever seen in the ABA and I also went to a NIFL game in Sarasota (before they folded halfway through the season) and this is by far a superior product on and off the field.

The only thing I found odd is that you couldn't get into the bar at the endzone and still see the game, you had to have a "special ticket" when I asked how do I get the special ticket the response was "you have to be given one" which was a response yes, but not a direct answer to my question. Also the pricing was curious, you could buy 10.50 tix, 20.50 tix or 30.50 tix. I went with the 10 dollar tix and was given (at least according to the program) a seat in the 20 dollar area. When I went to the upper level behind the goal posts, I couldn't get in because it was a 10 dollar ticket area. Just to put that into context, I had a seat in a 20 dollar area and couldn't get into the cheap seats, yet could easily move into the more expensive seats. In fact I was encouraged by the usher to go to the expensive seats.

On the field Flint obviously don't travel with a kicker as they went for 2 point conversions on every touchdown and when kicking off another player (88 - no names on Flint jerseys) did the kicking. He was awful kicker, good player but an awful kicker. The guy managed to kick it out of bounds on the 20 yard line in indoor football! Ya, HIS OWN 20 yard line. Then he did it again, getting to his own 15. I mean if you can't kick a ball 15 yards in a straight line I don't know why they let you out again. He'd shank it every time.

I'll definately be back in Worcester for more games, it was good value for my 10.50.

The Charter Zone (the bar that overlooks the field) is normally open for Worcester Sharks games while the game is going on, but the Surge have a special deal where you have to buy tickets for it.

I don't know the full story because I never go in there, but I do know there is a cost involved.

And there's something different going on in the second level behind the goal posts from last season, where they used to let anyone up there and now it's just people with tickets to those sections. I don't know why, or even if the Surge are aware of it.

I also want to thank you for your input on the "no paying" situation. I asked a few of the guys and got the same answer, so I'm glad that someone from the outside posted about it to add credibility to the answer.

Could it be they're trying to stop people from just running over there for kickoffs?

That's probably what it is, but it is a change from last season.

Unfortunately I was not able to attend either of the first two home games; I will probably go to the May 10th game. From what I understand the entire League is significantly improved this season; they seem to be much better able to deal with problems, such as the recent Fort Wayne ownership situation, and they seem to have chased away the "I'll get cash advances on my credit cards and buy my own football team" people. Regarding the rumor about players not being paid: the person who claims to know what goes on behind the scenes with the New England Surge apparently has never even been to the state of Massachusetts, and probably could not find Worcester on a map, so I don't know how he has "inside information" about the team. Sykotyk's post about the end zone seats is probably correct; at the games I went to last season there was a huge scramble to run behind the goalposts before every extra point attempt, so security is probably trying to stop people from getting trampled. The stairs in that part of the arena are pretty steep, and it is not a good place to run around.

The north end zone seating section is what the New England Surge call the "Touchdown Club". Think of it as a sort of section-wide, private luxury suite. As I understand it, you can't buy individual tickets for that section. Instead, you have to purchase season tickets, at $300 per ticket. I think that the Surge had in mind that the Touchdown Club ticket holders would be business people buying seats to be able to network, make business deals, and impress clients. Apparently, the section includes free catered food. The bar itself is new this year and is pretty nice-looking. At the Surge game I attended, I saw that security would chase away kids trying to get into the Touchdown Club section to retrieve stray footballs.

Some of the $10.50 tickets are actually in the lower level, in the corner sections. I believe that this is not shown in the seating charts online or in the program (which only shows $10.50 seats in the upper section). However, they are shown in the seating charts at the box office. These corner seats are a great bargain. The sight lines for these seats are somewhat strange since the DCU center was built for basketball rather than hockey. People sitting in the bottom of the corner sections have to turn their heads and sort of look behind them in order to see the end zones. It's probably a big pain for hockey, but for football games it's not too bad.

When I posted that six weeks ago that was the impression that I had; obviously I was mistaken. Expect to see the replacement players return soon!
