Can anyone fill me in on the IBL? What does it pay? Is it a "legit" league? Does anyone go anywhere after playing there? is it like the USBL? Thanks

The pay depends on the team and its ownership. Some teams pay way more than others.

The IBL will succeed because if has an international feel to it, with Canadian teams and Teams from China and Japan, so this League has the support of a few countries and will no doubt become more and more popular with fans and players, just ask Jamario Moon...

what ibl team did jamario moon play on? this is the first I heard of that.

the ibl is good solid rec league, nothing more. It could have been a very good league, but you have a league commissioner who is satisfied with the league fees and profits he gets, so he has no motivation to make it better.

Tell me, how many quality players are you going to get to play for 50 dollars to no dollars a game and no insurance, some teams with little or no housing, no consistent practice schedule.

But hey, it certainly a step above my church league,,......... Hmmmm, I think.

CanadianBaller is probably thinking about the Gary Steelheads. However, the Steelheads were in the USBL last season when Jamario Moon played for them.

MJ seems to have a handle on player pay. The pay varies from team to team. How many quality players are you going to get to play for $50 to zero dollars a game?!? I don't know. Gary has guys like 2007 CBA scoring leader Shaun Fountain, Kenyon Gamble, and former NBA'er Sam Mack. Are they making only $50 to zero dollars per game? I don't know, but these guys seem to keep coming back game after game. You, yourself said Keith Gayden was the best player in the league. Is Keith a quality player or not? Can Keith Gayden hold his own in your church league?

I like the IBL's multi-tier business model. Teams spend what they can afford to spend only. More owners have a chance to remain owners this way and more players get a chance for professional exposure. The only downfall I see is when a somewhat free-spending team meets a barebones team in competition. The result is usually a blowout.

okay ken, i said I would not debate you about the ibl since you have been hired as league marketing director. But i will share this:

Those players from Gary will jump ship today if they get another offer, i happen to know they are actively looking for an overseas gig as we speak. as far as sam mack is concerned, he lives not to far from gary, and what else does he have to do? and you talk about him like he is the second coming of Jordan. He can only play in this league and get good numbers, he certainly couldn't in any other league (well my church league i guess).

As far as Keith Gayden is concerned, he is loyal to Elgin because they have been good to him. But I talked to him yesterday, believe me, he will bolt this league when he gets an offer somewhere else as well. As far as the players in the CBA going and playing overseas after the season, the remaining players in the CBA or PBL would still beat the ibl all stars.

Now for a little double talk (which I usually do), there are some good players in the ibl, and I do not want to denegrate anyone who is a good player. cedric Moodie, kieth gayden, shaun fontaine, anthony kyle, kenyon gamble, and there a couple of good players also on the holland team (whose name escape me).

the league does serve a purpose however , and it gives guys a chance to play and stay in shape until they get another job. I wish it somehow had a vison for improving, I mean what kind of business plan is it to have windy city players playing for free, against elkhart players who are paid a decent wage. It just seems that any good player will jump to the team that is paying. I mean if elkart wanted any player on their team (windy city), could they not get them? Except of course the player owner.

Well I'm just venting, the Lakers lost, since the Bulls are lousy, I had jump on a bandwagon, so why not take L.A.?

That's no secret. Shaun Fountain FOUND an overseas gig earlier this IBL season, but now he's back. Of course the Gary players would jump ship today if they had a better offer. That's the nature of minor league ball. Put yourself in the best possible position to advance your career.

Hmmmmm. I seem to remember Sam Mack putting up some pretty good numbers in the CBA a few years back. Back when Sioux Falls, Dakota, and Idaho were still in the league and the CBA led the D-League in NBA call-ups.

I don't know nationalities to sell tickets... unless people know that their national team or established club or league team is playing. These aren't national teams. They're not selling tickets. The Chinese team has played all of one game... something's wrong there.

I'm curious to know if a western Canadian division might work. Would Kelowna buy in? I'm not sure about Vancouver, but what about the upcoming arena in Abbotsford? Could Lethbridge and their somewhat soft hockey support lead to something more substantial for basketball? Could a smaller town or two be swayed? Victoria or Nanaimo on the island?

Jamario Moon did not play in the IBL. He did play for Gary during the 06-07 season when the Steelheads were part of the USBL.

I think a Western Canadian division could work. Though Vancouver is too far west for the area I'd think would work. But I think if you set up teams in former Canadian WBL cities it would work. Calgary, Saskatoon and Winnipeg were all very supportive of the WBL teams they had. I realize that this is 15 years ago and all, but back then all three cities seemed to embrace summer basketball. So I'd say if you put teams in those three cities and perhaps Lethbridge and Regina, you could be successful. Those 6 teams could form a regional pod that would work well both travelwise and likely attendance wise. I realize Regina has never had a full-time pro basketball team and the last teams in the rest of the cities have failed. However, one should remember that these were winter teams and in Calgary's case it was an ABA team.

Vancouver, B.C. should be excluded from a Western Canadian division and should be put in the Washington State pod. Vancouver is quite far from Edmonton and most of what I'd consider potential franchises. Victoria would likely work and could play at the Save On Centre, but should still be paired with the Washington State franchises.

I say what I said because I don't anticipate the long-term survival of the "Washington" pod. Bellingham seems the only viable market of the bunch, and the route to taking care of them, to me, involves coupling them with Yakima in another league.

Central Oregon is inclusive here, BTW. Portland is no more viable than Seattle or Tacoma, and Snohomish in Monroe doesn't tickle my fancy.
