I'm new to the Can-Am so I can't really comment much. However, have the Caps lost so much you think they'll finish last?
I understand you are a Skyhawks fan and it looks like they did make some great signings. But going from worst to first? We'll see.
As for my Rapids, I don't know what to expect yet. We have only a few players signed. Most are pitchers, mostly left-handers. With the park we have here, and these lefties, and no real power hitters as of yet (I don't expect them to find any at this time), I think there will be lots of low scoring games. They may end up on the wrong end of the score and indeed finish last. We have some good pitching and may be competitive. Just a matter of waiting what the lineup will look like.
Napoleon Calzado last week was a good pickup. Hits for average, power not bad but doesn't walk much. Versatile too, can play almost any position.

I guess it is a bold prediction, but I really can't see anyone beating them out for 1st except the Surf. If North Shore was still in the league then maybe I'd put them in 1st and the Skyhawks in 2nd. But right now I think they are with the lineup they have ( and great young pitchers).

nice predictions, very in depth. Opening day will be great, lots of fans and finally a great team. I cant wait to see Yohanny Valera make his deput. One thing I hope is that Matt Bishop can pitch that game, speaking of Bishop, hes definitley going to have a below-three ERA. Cyall at opening day if youre going!

Hey Skyhawker, are you going to opening day? Or, which games will you be going to? One game im looking at is the John Kelly- Kyle Ruwe matchup on the 2nd.
Skyhawker
04-08-2008, 07:25 PM
skyhawks96 i am going to all of them except a few in july. otherwise i'd like to attend them all. and when the skyhawks are playing while im gone in july, im gonna be getting on the computer everyday to look up the scores and trades and what not. i may not get to a few, but i plan on going and telling people i know about the games so that the attendance can get better that way we can assure at least a 2009 season.

Hey Skyhawker if you are going to opening day I might see you there, lol. Anyway, It was just confirmed on Can- Am league.com, Sandy Madera has been sold to the Red Sox, yes Its true, Jackals fans, breathe in, breathe out , breathe in, breathe out.... WHAT THE HECK WERE THE JACKALS THINKING!!?!?!?!??!!. I'm now going to make some changes to my standings. BTW Skyahwker where are your seats at games?
Skyhawker
04-08-2008, 09:00 PM
seat???? haha i dont have any specific seat, i just get bleacher creatures haha and then walk around, sit where i feel like sitting. sometimes i stay in one seat, but rarely, thats only if its a game i feel like keeping the book for. otherwise... 7$ bleacher tix and im set, sit where i want for the cheapest price. i am indeed going to opening day. i also forgot to mention this.... back in like october i sent an email to ben wittowski, saying i thought he should try and sign some bigger name guys. i named many guys who had former big league experience.... including the BIG DOG... i mentioned that he was in winnepeg, and that it'd be cool to get him. im not taking credit for the signing, because he clearly came to sussex to play under Lanier, who managed him in winnepeg. just thought, i put his name in ben's mind, and maybe he talked with hal... idk prolly just a coincedence. haha

Skyhawks96, I'd love to make predictions but I really don't know much about the league yet. I will comment on yours however.
Young as MVP: possible. But .314? OK, he could get a few balls drop in and he's hit .300 before. I think 35 HR is also possible in his case, 25 is more likely.
Bishop: don't know him. Checking his stats, looks like you are basing this CY award on his 2006 season. Other than that year, hasn't shown much. Gives up too many hits.
I like this John Kelly fellow in Brockton.
Haven't had time to analyze each team and see which is the team to beat. It looks at first glance that your top three could be correct. As this is a split-season league, all three could make the playoffs.
Give me a week or two.
Skyhawks96
04-09-2008, 01:32 PM
OBF, John Kelly could very well repeat his cy young performance, but I just wondered if he had the offense to back him up. Sure brockton has great hitters like Coronado, Alcantara, and Lebron, but they could use some more depth in the order. One reason is why I picked bishop is because of his low ERA the past two years.
Walter Young
The Big Dog's BA might drop a bit, but I just have a hunch he will have a career year and will get along with some great supportive teammates such as Alex Frazier and Yohanny Valera. He could hit in the .280s but I really think he will be in the .300s this year.
PS Ive got a quick question for all of you, Who is Your favorite Can-Am league player, mine is Yohanny Valera, of course:D
Skyhawks96

Here are my stat predictions, Ill be doing one of these every week.

1.Ron Perodin .292 37RBI 2HR 46SB
2.Jorge Moreno .309 72RBI 20HR 30SB
3.Yohanny Valera .316 70RBI 17HR 7SB
4.Walter Young .314 118RBI 35HR 1SB
5.Alex Frazier .323 78RBI 23HR 11SB
6.Mike Torres .351 69RBI 7HR 19SB
7.Ben Tinius .296 67RBI 10HR 15SB
8.Matt Weston .279 75RBI 13HR 9SB

Skyhawks 96
some back round info: Vardaro was lead off batter for four years in a row at USM
Skyhawks96
04-13-2008, 11:03 PM
Thanks for the info. maybe on some offdays Vardaro might be upped to the 1st or 2nd spot, when Moreno and torres are not playing. With the amazing bench that Lanier has now, I would not expect anyone to play all 91 games. Especially Valera ,Torres and Vardaro, with each of them having solid backups in (the young star)Brian Grupp, Chris Brown, and Rios. Chris Brown will probably be the best pinch hitter. Im thinking of maybe putting Torres at SS, and Brown at 2nd, which could be more likeley than Vardaro just winning the job. But im not giving up on Vardaro just yet.
By the way newfan, I must ask, what are your predictions for the 2008 season?
newfan
04-14-2008, 09:11 AM
I'm new to Can am baseball. But I must confess to one thing Vardaro is my son so I may be the wrong person to ask, also Grupp is spending a week at my house before reporting to camp. They will be working out together and going to two games at Fenway with my tickets.

First of all i would just like to point out that im not the kind of guy thats gonna bug someone to talk or get an autograph and etc. With that out of the way, heres my subject. WHY is the name Jay Yaconetti on the skyhawks roster and not BEN TINIUS. Guys Im getting scared, dont tell me they traded him?!?! Skyhawker, do you know anything about this?

[QUOTE=Skyhawks96;90312]summerfan, what are your predictions f
1)Sussex.
2)Atlantic City.
3)Nashua.
4)Brockton.
5)Ottawa.*
6)New Jersey
7)Worcester
8)Quebec
I know people will say ottawa is a expanson team they won't have a good year.On paper they look very good for a expanson team and i think they could really make a strong push for the play offs.
Skyhawks96
04-15-2008, 05:00 PM
I couldnt agree with you more on Ottowa. They have some great players and pitchers. DeLaSantos and Bergeron are great hitters as well as defensive infielders. I thought about moving the Rapids up a few spots. I probably will by May. Thanks for the predictions summerfan!:-D

The Brockotn Rox will return to their rightful place as the class of the can-am league in both wins and losses and attendence!!!
Skyhawks96
04-15-2008, 11:42 PM
The Rox will be the best pitching team in the league. John Kelly makes them alot better. So does the signing of Jacob Ramos. I felt like doing a Rox projected lineup and rotation, so here it is...
Rotation
1.Rolando Viera
2.John Kelly
3.Mike McTamney
4.Ryan Williams
5. several....
Lineup
1. Jeremy Coronado- LF
2. Dom Romos- SS
3. Ervin Alcantara- CF
4. Francisco Lebron- DH
5. Dan Milano- C
6. Melvin Falu- 2B
7. Eugene Julien- 3B
8. Daniel Cox- 1B
9. Matt Moloney- RF
Good team, they have a young and developing Lineup, but it is good enough to back up their amazing rotation.
By the way, gmboy, what are your predictions?
CanAm1
04-16-2008, 09:41 PM
Nashua gets no love? Is it due to lack of not being able to sign Vets, or what? I remember many people didn't give them credit last year and look at what happened...
Skyhawks96
04-17-2008, 09:32 AM
Well, the Pride are a good team, but the losses of Cobellow, Olmo, P angelo burrows, and Jeremy Acey were all big. I thought they would definetly keep at least Olmo. If they can get two big name hitters before May 22, theyll be good and back into contention, but right now, they need a pitcher, a big hitting DH, and a third baseman.
PS, Can-Am1 what are your predictions?
CanAm1
04-17-2008, 02:33 PM
My Predictions are as follows
1) Brockton - Good pitching beats good hitting any day and they are LOADED on the rotation side
2) Sussex Skyhawks - Here's the CanAm's version of the Detroit Tigers on paper
3) Atlantic City Surf - Over looked team with tons of talent, and experience
4) Nashua Pride - Looks like today's acqusitions could put them over the top, or keep them from winning
5) Ottawa Rapids - They are right on the edge of being a playoff team, but will the Olypmics lose them some of their studs
6) Quebec Capitales - Always find a way to win, and Lantigua is a force
7) New Jersey Jackals - Rebuilding year with all the signings, retirements, and deals but could surprise with a good core coming back
8) Worcester Tornadoes - Again, could be a surprise team, but I dont count on it
There are my predictions and I do not know how good they will be, but its a chance. Any other ideas on projected lineups, mainly Nashua's and Atlantic City's?
Skyhawker
04-18-2008, 06:28 AM
thats right skyhawks96......... the skyhawks did indeed trade our David WRight!!!!!! tinius is gone and so is vince davis, i think this was a terrible trade although yaconetti has more power than tinius and im hearing that they mite get dittfurth back as the player to be named later in the trade.
Skyhawks96
04-18-2008, 11:37 AM
If we get Dittfurth back to be a 3rd starter Ill jump for joy!!! He would be so much of an upgrade over davis. They would sickening against right handed lineups... Can Am 1 I do have a projected lineup for the surf.
1. Anthony Granato- 3B
2. Will Quintana- LF
3. Joe Burke- C
4. Ed Kim- 1B
5. Clyde Williams- RF
6. Patrick Warfle- 2B
7. Brad Thoma- 3B
8. Zadoc Christensen- SS
9 BJ Weed- CF
Thats just about it, the Surf are gonna be really good this year, Theyll be a real challenge for that 1 spot.
CanAm1
04-18-2008, 01:59 PM
I agree with everything that you stated, and I do think that with Dittfurth ( spelling) back, he might push the over the tippt top. However I am really trying to think of the roatation for the Pride and Surf. Rodaway is the clear number 1 on the Surf side while Nagasaka is the number 1 with the Pride. But whose after that for both teams....
Skyhawks96
04-18-2008, 10:40 PM
Here are my projected rotations for those two,
ACSURF
1. Brian Rodoway
2. Ben Thurmond
3. JC Huget
4. Donovan Hendricks
5. Ryan Rafferty
Nashua
1.Hideki Nagaska
2. Jason Kosow
3.Lance Stevens
4. Yano Ejji
5. Several...
From what they both have they shoudl look like this. Tell me watchya think.
CanAm1
04-18-2008, 11:54 PM
I would completely agree with AC for the most part, but Nashua's i have some disagreements...
1st, Koscow is not even a part of the Pride any longer so he would be out, and Yano was 2-2 last year with a 5.92 in 50.1 innings. Not very respectable for a starter, epsecially with the pitching talent that they do have. I would expect Yano to possibly be a long relief role. However my 5 would be something like this....
1 Nagasaka
2 Valentin
3 Stevens
4 Kosyk
5 Suero
Now Valentin is a proven starter with Fort Worth, reason for my number two. Stevens is a returnee from last year, Kosyk was 4-2 with a 3.08 last year with New Haven....as a rookie... and Suero has the afflieated experience that would signify a number 5. However, I wouldn'be be surprised if Willet makes a push for the starting rotatino if he is healthy. Thats my five, time for your feedback...:D

CanAM1, I agree. It seems like I underestimated Nashuas pitching. I heard the surf just realeased Quintana. The Skyhawks should sign him as a backup and move Weston to 1st. PLEAASSEE PLEEAASSSE HAL!!!! BRING BACK RYAN DITTFURTH!!!! Do that, sign Davilla and Alvarado to be backups and get some young relievers from Camden and Edinburg. Here are my pitching predictions for the skyhawks,
ERA W-L K
1. Matt Bishop- 2.86 13-5 93
2. Kyle Ruwe- 3.97 11-3 101
3. Ryan Dittfurth- 3.45 9-3 115
4. Gary Galvez- 3.56 8-6 73
5. Roger Lincoln- 3.67 5-5 71

OK, you ask for my predictions, here they are. Hard to gauge what teams will do when you don't know them at all, not to mention that many players change teams and there is a lot of new players, but here goes.
Atlantic City has retained most of their players from last year. I figure 55 wins. They added Dennis Robinson to their rotation as well as Kyle George. Steve Wyland looks like he can help. I am most sure of my predictions for AC than any other team. First place for sure.
Brockton. Has improved adding James Baker and Derek Drage. Not too many leads will be lost with those two. Will improve on last year's record, say 50+ wins.
Quebec. Team remains intact from last year. Can't see them regressing much. Should make playoffs.
Sussex. Gary Galvez is a nice addition. Valera is a decent catcher. Walter will provide power. Torres solidifies the infield. Should get them closer to 500 but over? Maybe but not by much in my opinion. Might be enough for a playoff berth however.
Worcester. Catcher Alex Trezza is most notable addition. Jerson Perez at short will improve the team but I only see them as a 500 team at best.
Nashua. Another 500 team.
New Jersey. A whole new infield, none of which played in Can-Am before. Will probably fall back from last year so below 500.
Ottawa. Not many players yet with only a month to go. Strength will be pitching, especially with park that tends towards being a pitcher's park. Recently signed first catcher, Maxime Bouchard. Napoleon Calzado is only player with any power so far and he might be most of the offense. If they can get more, this team could be competitive. But I expect lots of low score games and maybe the Rapids can win their fair share. If not, as I think is likely to happen, last place, far behind seventh.
CanAm1
04-19-2008, 05:44 PM
I think that the addition of
Dittfurth will help in the depth of the Sussex rotation but if I do remember last year he was a bit of Dr. Jacakal and Mr. Hyde, though I could be wrong. OttawaFan I understand with your picks, but having the defending champs at 500 I don't understand you're reasoning. Yes they did lose a good group of guys but they brought in a good group from the defunct New Haven. Basically I just would like to knoew why you have them so low....

With all due respect i think your a bit off with ottawa. The have a very solid pitching staff and a good deal of power.Calzado is not the only power the rapids have about 4 big bats have of right now in there line up.I would be very very shocked if they don't finish 5th maybe even make the play offs. This could be one of the best expanson team in a long time to have a winning record.
Skyhawks96

I really think that the addition of Yaconetti will give the Skyhawks a more powerfull lineup. With the entire transformation I see them coming in at least the top three. Theyre outfield is great defensivley and offensivley (i probably spelled those wrong). The infield is a great one, and there is their best offseason pickup Walter Young, who is gonna be the David Ortiz of the Can-Am. I am however going to change my predicted standings.
1. Skyhawks- 61-31- If they do get Dittfurth back theyll get 60 w's.
2. Surf- 55-36- Great team, they could need an outfielder with the loss of Quintana
3. Rox- 54-37- The pitching will push them over the top, a decent lineup but certainly not the best in the league
4. Rapides- 50-41 Ive become upsesed with the rapides this past week, This team reminds me of the Tampa Bay Rays.
5. Jackals- 46-45- The great prostpects and my pick for ROY (Dallas Christionson) will make them a suprise team.
6. Capitales- 43-48- Latingua will have another nice year with 22HRS.
7. Pride- 42-49- I did not like those signings at all, im sorry they are just not adressing their big need for a power hitter.
8. Tornadoes- 35-56- The rotation and Lineup needs a year to develop, but I really cant see them making a push.
Yes, I DO have the rapides in the playoffs. The lineup is great and now they have a decent power hitter in Bergeron, I'm now going to do a Rapides projected lineup.
Skyhawks96
04-19-2008, 10:46 PM
Rapides projected lineup
1. Jose DeLos Santos- SS
2. Napoleon Calzado- CF
3. Abner Arroyo- 3B
4. Jabe Bergeron- 1B
5. Jeremy Ware- RF
6. Jared Lemiux- LF
7. Max Bouchard- C
8. Scotty McKnight- 2B
9. Nick Trainor- DH- For now, Im sure they will sign someone like Quintana to DH.
Thats what it looks like now, its a good lineup. Tell me watchya think.

Can't have all teams over 500... Many changes there and I figured they couldn't be as good this year. I could be wrong. I did predict a year ago that the Red Sox would not win their division and that Toronto would win the wild card.
SummerFan said:

I hope you're right. I looked at Bergeron and he is not that bad. Not lots of home run power but does get a lot of doubles which could increase here. Arroyo looks similar.
Miles Wolff did say he will try to make this team competitive right away and he is heading in that direction. I should probably revise my predictions and move them up a couple of notches. Still, lots of questions remain with this team.
> Nick Trainor- DH- For now, Im sure they will sign someone like Quintana to DH.
Funny, I was thinking the same thing when I learned Quintana was available.

The rapids have signed Sambu Ndungidi he is a swich hitter dh.
OttawaBallFan
04-22-2008, 05:48 PM
Not sure where you get your information SummerFan but thanks for the heads up.
Ndungidi turns 23 in a few weeks. Born in Montreal so likely speaks French and relate to francophone community in and around Ottawa, probably a factor Mr. Wolff considered in signing him, despite foreign sounding name.
Drafted by Dodgers as an outfielder. Played in GCL in 2003-04. Did very little in a total of 49 games over those two years.
Out of pro baseball until shows up in Edmonton of Northern league last year. Much better stats there. Only weakness is striking out a lot but has some power.
Now if the Rapids could sign Stubby Clapp to play second or short, we'd have quite a team.
Also would like to add that local boy Pete Laforest was released by the Phillies recently. The Rapids could use another catcher right now.

Skyhawker, here is what I think the roster will look like come opening day...

as soon as i get time, i am going to do a stat review of last years stats of the guys on the team, then i will compile all the stats and compare them and see where they would rank in last years list of leaders in team stats.

Does anyone know if the Skyhawks have a Radio broad cast that goes out on the internet? I'm in Boston and would love to hear the home games.

rich garces is back with nashua and you can call me crazy but i believe that their pitching staff is very very very soild and can carry the lineup even in they dont have a big bat as some say they need here....

This is going to be long and extensive. I’m going to try and take this year’s upcoming team, compile their last year’s stats and come up with a team record, and where they would rank in the stats of the teams from last year. So here it goes........
Batters
NAME AVG. R H HR RBI SB OBP.
Brian Grupp -------------- .171 3 1 0 2 0 .197
Yohanny Valera --------- .263 57 99 7 53 1 .308
Matt Hackney------------ .213 13 43 1 13 6 .346
Chris Brown------------- .263 54 89 10 47 14 .355
Kevin Rios---------------- .275 27 71 1 39 1 .331
Mike Torres-------------- .326 48 114 6 63 7 .367
Nick Vardaro-------------- .308 30 49 1 16 7 .390
Matt Weston-------------- .276 60 120 11 69 2 .333
Jay Yaconetti------------- .278 45 97 5 47 1 .325
Walter Young------------- .313 54 120 21 78 2 .377
Alex Frazier--------------- .287 55 91 12 60 11 .354
Jorge Moreno------------- .294 76 111 14 60 27 .363
Ron Perodin -------------- .282 58 107 0 20 31 .342
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TOTAL------------------- .273 580 1232 89 667 110 .337
Lets all remember here this is more batters than will make the team. I believe grupp will be cut. Also let’s hope that young and Moreno hit more homeruns and that frazier and valera’s averages will be better this year.

Now for the pitching, this many pitchers will not make the team, so the record and other stats would be altered, idk how, whether for better or worse, but I believe this is a good estimate for the rankings.

Skyhawker, I have the same idea as you. Unfortunately, I won't have time to do it myself so if you do this for all teams, that would be great.
However, you are going about it wrong. But first, I think you made a mistake in the total team ERA. It can't be 3.48, lower than all but three of the pitchers. Seems it should be almost half a run higher. Maybe even a run higher seeing Rogers and his 7.35 ERA.
All you need is ERA and OPS. You also need last season's league ERA and OPS. Compare your numbers for each team against the league average.
So, divide your team's OPS by the league's OPS. Divide the team's ERA by the league's ERA. Multiply each by half the number of scheduled games. Average those two numbers and you'll have a good approximation of the expected wins for the team.
For even better results, calculate the OPS or ERA of each player against the league he played in last year. That'll give you an index for each player relative to the league. Average all of them out for the players on the team. Multiply and you get the wins estimate for the team.
To go even further and better approximation, calculate each player's index relative to the number of innings or plate appearances you figure he will get. A relief pitcher getting 40 innings does not have the same weight as a starter with 150. If the reliever has a high (or low) index, it will skew the results to the positive or negative. Same with hitters.
OPS and ERA are the key stats to use: ability of hitters' to get on base and thus score runs and the pitchers' ability to prevent runs. That's what wins ball games. It also should be done relative to the league they played in.
Also, assuming your numbers are correct, don't you think those pitchers give up a few too many walks?

thanks for all the input, yeah i didnt think the ERA was quite right either. i took all my stats from baseballcube.com. they are all quite close. except guys like weston and rogers. rogers played many more games than he will in a canam season, so did weston. he played like 105 games last year. his numbers wont be as good and rogers wont have so many walks and K's.

The way I see it, it's like all the teams except 1 are expansion teams this year, the lone exception being Quebec with half of its 2007 roster back.
What will the chemistry be like between all those new players? No one knows! 4 new managers too! Takes time to adjust to a new field boss!
Baring injuries, Quebec and Worcester are looking good to me (living in Quebec City). New Jersey always finds a way to be there at the end.
The other teams... no idea!

How do the predictions stand after almost half the season?
Quebec should win the first half with the most trusted reciepe: the best defense translates into the best team ERA (by far) and the fewest Ks and the most BBs on offense into the 3rd best offensive average!
Worcester stayed up there for a good stretch and Sussex is finally playing "Hal Lanier" ball. New Jersey got a shot in the arm from the signing of Vic Davilla but could not maintain the drive! The Surf did not get it going with their new bickering manager, Cecil Fielder!

HEY HEY HEY!!!! wasup everybody, i know i havent been on in a while but im back! I recently attended 2 skyhawks games. The 1st being a win over Nashua 5-3, and the second the 9-5 loss to Quebec =(. Lol and Skyhawker im not sure if you noticed but I was the kid yelling stuff like peanut butter jelly, and ducky etc. lol. But I have a few things to say, first off, we need pitching badly and with dittys stats for lincoln i say they should lay off. What we need is a few young guns and a top prospect starter that can make a difference. Here is a trade i had in mind,
Sussex Sioux City
Nick Vardaro Nick Singleton- SP
Rick Lawyer Jason Bryan- OF
Michael Rogers
I believe this is a good trade and I would think sioux city wouldnt mind trading for a few prostpects. Singleton would be a great, young pitcher that would really help this rotation. As for Bryan, a good bench player that I hear can also play some infield.
So if this trade goes down, and if we get Bishop back, the rotation should look like this,
1. Kyle Ruwe
2. Mark Michael- I see huge ptential in him, he was great in the nashua game.
3. Matt Bishop- HORAA!!!
4. Craig Snipp
5. Nick Singleton
Tell me watchya think:D
