My opinion follows:

Look how low the bar is now in minor league basketball. ALL accomplished by the ABA. Just by reading a few articles this Monday morning and seeing that people are padding themselves on the back for playing a full schedule. How rediculous does this sound? Some are claiming we played more games than scheduled. What? Does this make sense? How low is the bar in the minor league Basketball world?
Pretty low is my opinion. You can thank Joe Newman for that, having a league where only 38% of the games are played. SO what happens instead of talking about great play by teams, people are proud they played all there games and use this as a measuring stick of a good organization. Nonsense.
The time has come where the real leagues, CBA, PBL should sit down and discuss the future of minor league basketball. No one can claim they made money. The d-league has yet to figure out a way to be successful, with 1 million dollar entrance fees and operating budgets of a million dollars, what business sense does that make?(all d-league teams lost money last year) What business sense does it make to place teams in remote areas and have large traveling budgets? ( CBA) then ask owners for $ 150,000 ( 75 operating to league and 75 for travel) What business sense does it make to take over a falied team ? ( 125,000 to Jacksonville)( PBL) when it could be better spent on the league and its good memebers. Time for some soul searching by the CBA and PBL. As far as the ABA, your contribution or better yet your destruction of minor league basketball has been well noted.

Sorry, a1, but specifically on the issue of the PBL taking over Jacksonville, it makes a lot of business sense. Again, I offer the model of MLB taking over the Expos until they could be moved and sold. Would you have rather had the PBL pull an ABA and let the team fold, creating holes in the schedules of the other teams? You say the money could be better spent on the league and its good members. I say spending the money to keep the league's schedule intact is money that was spent on the league and its good members.

Yes, the ABA has ruined Minor League Basketball to the point that playing all of your season is an accomplishment, but it is an accomplishment, one that the CBA was, alas, unable to manage as well. We all long for the day when this is routine and expected, but never let the perfect be the enemy of the good. The PBL pulled its season off and they are to be commended for that. And you should be happy that the bar is higher next year.
