Expansion cities, towns, villages and rec centers, Watch what happens after the Great 8. See who sticks around in the rec league ABA.

Vermont, Manchester, Texas, Halifax, Quebec>>>>>> Gone to another league.

If the 170 teams that folded in the ABA werent proof enough of the rec league, then by all means, send me 5k, at 50 bucks a month and Ill let you play in the AABA.

watch:

Final Score: Quebec 97 Vermont 102

outside shot that Joe may want a rematch of last year, then it will be:

Texas 104 Vermont 112

As I have stated before ... the PBL is buying the CBA. Once this transaction is final, the ABA northeast teams will form a super division in the new league. Details are being worked out as we post here ... such as: which teams stay, which are weeded out, when is the season, how long is the schedule, what are the rules, etc.

So then i would assume vermont is in fact part of this? How can a1 survive that?

add San Diego, Long Beach and Quebec to the bye bye Joe list.

They wont say it, But Iwill...they are gone from the ABA next season.

All confirmed.

Joe, read it and weep buddy, your little game of "10k to play" is done.

Until the last sucker is weeded out, the game will never end.

The quality level will go down, though. There probably aren't many solvent potential owners left -- they've already seen how poorly run the ABA is and will take their money elsewhere.

What's left are the truly deluded dreamers who believe that you can run a pro sports team on a $10k market reservation and a prayer and who don't know where to find the Internet to do due diligence. We just saw what one season where they were half of the league was like... wait until they're the entire league.

I wouldn't expect much expansion in any minor basketball league given the state of the economy as banks are going to become very reluctant to issue loans (Bear Stearns collapsing and Citigroup losing more than 60% of it's stock value in less than a year are examples.) . I think the ABA is going to be seeing far fewer entities with the ability to pay the start-up costs for a franchise.

I've been thinking about this for a while now, and with only ten teams still playing, and based on what information has been posted, I can see the following:

Gone: Manchester (owner and players seen at Patroons game, city won't get a D-League franchise this year.), Halifax (the media wants it, the owner's had it), Texas (already playing as Dallas in PBL)

More Likely to Leave than Not: Vermont (FIBA rules on court size might hurt them, but that could be changed by relocation to another town.) Quebec (The owner is paying for the tournament, but the Kebekwa would be a perfect travel companion for Halifax),

Maybe/Maybe Not Montreal (There is an arena being rebuilt in Verdun, but the QMJHL franchise will be the primary tenants. Would also be a perfect travel companion for Halifax.)

Deserves Better, but Probably Staying: Atlanta (based only on the posts of Mr. Patterson, but I hope I'm wrong), San Diego (put them in the Western Division of the merged CBA/PBL, and they'll be fine.)

Staying:: Jersey Express (The owner seems committed to the league based on my visits to their website.), San Francisco (We got into the Final VIII? We're staying!)

Of the ten franchises in play, I think six or seven will go. As for Atlanta, please, please, please let me be wrong about their staying.

Don't think Texas-Vermont will happen to meet in the finals.

This was passed along from "Dogriver". Apparently, Joe sent a response to him asking about the playoffs.

On Thu, Mar 27, Vermont will play San Francisco, Texas will play Quebec
On Fri, Mar 28, Manchester will play either Halifax, Montreal or Jersey, San Diego will play Atlanta.

On Saturday, winner of the first two games will play; winner of the second two games will play.
On Sunday, winners will play for the championship.

San Francisco upset Orange County and Long Beach over the weekend to earn a spot.
The eighth spot is still up for grabs because Montreal (eligible) is in Singapore

That's what he sent me this AM and posed over on the Heaves' message board.

So the number 6 team in the "Power Rankings" is upset and won't go to the Great 8. Instead, the 14th ranked (and barely acknowledged) SF Rumble will play in Quebec.

Joe, what do you think about that? Is it fair that the ABA slapped together this last-minute post-season set-up and cost a qualified team a chance to travel?

Joe's reply:
I don't think it's the perfect solution and certainly not if a lower ranked team should upset one of the top eight

He damned the process even before the games were played...

The league is dammed. Why do we bother????

Vermont against San Francisco?????

It follows the Power Rankings.
Vermont is #1, San Francisco is #14.
Manchester is #2, The Halifax/Jersey/Montreal survivor is no higher than #11
San Diego is #4, Atlanta is #8
Texas is #5, Quebec is #7

It looks like a possible Vermont - Manchester round 5 or Vermont - San Diego in the final.

Joe has managed to botch even this up.

Good grief. The top 8 are simply dreamed up off the top of his head and he can't even rig a rigged contest. What a circus. Its incredible to think that as Brad Hester has left due to a lack of paycheck this charade of a rec league is actually in worse shape than before.

Not that the bar was ever set high around here, but for the Kebs doing some good organizing and keeping Newman at arms length, Joe 'ultimate sales university' Newman has managed to screw this up too.

The amazing thing is after all this is done and carnage everywhere the man will be honestly, genuinely shocked that some of the better teams leave the rec league................ sorry, not the rec league, but the WRECK LEAQUE

I think you are wrong. Legit leagues are the ones that will have problems.

Any one can come up with 10K. If you have a legit team in a real league, then you have to have real money and those leagues will have trouble.

Suckers are easy to find as the wigged one can tell you first hand.

I'm afraid I must admit my error on this one. I considered the possibility that the ABA may be a legitimate league. :(

When considering the people that may invest in the ABA, I should have referred to HL Mencken's quote: "Never overestimate the intelligence of the American people".

Rather than broadbrush the entire U.S. population, I'll paraphrase that to: "Never overestimate the intelligence of the ABA investor".:D

That is a good quote William, another one that pertains to the Indiana basement CEO comes from another William. William Shakespeare in his work Macbeth. "It is a tale. Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury. Signifying nothing"

Bomp is right, finding a moron willing to part with 10k is surprisingly simple, I would doubt any bank has ever financed a ABA franchise fee, normally these half-wits can russle that up. One guy even dipped into his 401k for an ABA team and said he did it to help 'secure his future' and he was 'putting his retirement funds to work'. MORONS!!!!!!!!!!

THe problems now with lending will effect a guy like an current ABA owner who wants to move out of this spiralling whirlpool into a real league.

I still have a soft spot for an older Hispanic gentleman whose observation of the United States Soccer Federation translates WAY too well...

Joe Newman couldn't plan to buy chicken at KFC.
