Teams cannot count on walk-up sales to generate enough revenue to carry the team. And in most instances, concession sales won't do it either. In most arenas, the management or concessionaire gets the revenue, not the team. As for merchandise sales, the team may sell an item for $10.00, but it doesn't get it all. That is the gross profit. The actual profit is minus the cost of the item, the salary for the sales person, and the % that the venue gets for allowing sales.
