Looks like a "professional development" football league called the United National Football League is trying to start in January 2009 with a whopping 22 franchises. A Google search will lead to few articles about the league that is based in New Haven (CT).

The web site is www.unflf.com.

The United National Football League is Proud to Announce They Have Signed Two Licensed Franchises in Texas
The United National Football League announced today that it has signed two licensed franchises in Texas. The leagues front office will soon announce the home locations of both organizations and contact information
New Haven, Conn. (PRWEB) February 7, 2008 -- The United National Football League announced today that it has signed two licensed franchises in Texas..that will form the foundation of the league's initial season set to kick-off in January 2009.The leagues front office will soon announce the home locations of both organizations and contact information.
The United National Football League is like no other league that has come before it. The UNFL is the first true professional developmental league focused on getting its athletes to the next level. The league is designed to create professional development opportunities for collegiate players who have the desire and physical ability to pursue this chosen career path. Similar to the minor league farm systems designed for the other professional sports, i.e. MLB, in which players compete against other top prospects throughout the country, the UNFL intends to do the same.
"Due to reasons ranging from inequities in media exposure and scouting methods of football players among various college divisions and conferences, to inadequate statistical measurements and arbitrary benchmarks, the current system to evaluate aspiring professional football athletes is seriously flawed. The UNFL can fill this gap by providing a truly competitive landscape to evaluate talent, enhance the player selection process, and enable professional football teams to provide the highest quality product to their loyal fan base," states Marvin Tomlin, league Co-Founder.
The UNFL is in the process of seeking licensed franchise owners for their 2009 season. If you are interested in being a licensed franchise owner and want more information. Please contact the UNFL front office at 877-349-1852.
For additional information on the UNFL you can go to the league's website at www.unflf.com or you can contact Ben Eison, league Co-Founder directly.

The United National Football League is less than a year away from kicking off its inaugural season – so what better time than now to chat with their senior leadership about the current status of the next big thing to hit the gridiron?

I had a few conversations with Brian Massey, the Executive Director of Marketing, and Marvin Tomlin, the CEO and Founding Partner of the UNFL, last week and came away with some interesting information on football’s first-ever truly developmental league.

Enjoy this short Question-and-Answer session with Massey and Tomlin as they continue to work around the clock to get the UNFL out of the starting gates.

It’s rare that fans are able to track a professional sports’ league during its infantile stages. What is the UNFL currently working on – or maybe the better question would be what is the UNFL not working on – as it sits just eleven months from its inaugural kickoff?

Presently we are working on securing our team ownerships, national and regional sponsorships, and stadium agreements.

The league released a statement about two weeks ago that a pair of franchises have been purchased in Texas. When will the locations of the organizations be released to the public, and from start to finish how long did it take to complete negotiations with the league’s first-ever owner(s)?

We promised the owners that we would keep things confidential while they work to secure their General Manager. Once the GM is aboard, we will make the announcement. Overall, the process took about eight weeks.

What are the requirements for a player to participate in the UNFL, and how long do they remain eligible?

A player has to have exhausted his college eligibility. There will be no underclassman, and they will have two years of eligibility in the UNFL.

Have any NFL personalities, or legends, expressed interest in becoming a part of what you guys are trying to accomplish?

Yes, Derrick Mayes of the Green Bay Packers and Mike Keller, who played with the Cowboys under Tom Landry, have expressed some interest.

How long will the regular season run?

It will be fourteen weeks, which includes the preseason. Overall, our season will run from January to early April.

Have you settled on the playoff structure? Will all the league’s teams make the postseason, or will it be restricted to the best teams?

Yes we have, and it will resemble the NFL’s format. Best records, division winners, and wild card teams will qualify each year.

Do you have any prospects for who might run, or commission, the UNFL during its inaugural campaign?

As I mentioned, Derrick Mayes and Mike Keller, who has played professionally and been a part of the NFL, NFL Europe, and USFL, will likely become a part of the league. We also have other potential candidates that are being targeted.

Have you signed licensing agreements with any companies for advertisements or equipment?

Not at this point, but we have approached Under Armour, Russell, Riddell and Schutt Sports. We also plan to contact more companies in the near future.

Where do the founders see the UNFL in five years?

We see the UNFL as a fully-functioning, professional developmental league and the direct feeder of professional talent to the NFL – with twenty-two teams, a national fan base.

If you are interested in becoming a part of the UNFL, through ownership or otherwise, please contact the league using UNFLF.com.

Then I emailed them again with different questions, I also had an interested party email the league about potential ownership....havent heard anything since

If I were the NFL, and I assume you have no affiliation with them, I would sue your ass for the Browns, Rams, Jets and Raiders rip-offs you're attempting to sell. What's with those logos? If they aren't blatant rip-offs they're bad anime. Rule of thumb: anime doesn't make good logos. Most comic book geeks I know aren't into sports, maybe you need to understand your potential demographics better.

I'm not sure that the otaku demographic and the comic book nerd demographic completely overlap, although I'm with you on the logos.

The first time I saw this website I thought it was a joke. When I saw the video I thought that the guys were very sincere but they've got a long way to go.

Ignoring the current logos as just place holders, it still doesn't look too good with only three franchises "sold" and a mere 10 months to kickoff.

All in all, what else do we have to talk about?

The Logos really suck!

I doubt there will be any West Coast teams, as usual....
