UHL media time out

Can anyone out there tell me the purpose of a "media timeout" once during each period of a UHL game? With all the emphasis nowadays for speeding up the game, this seems like a colossal waste of time. Also, what's up with that real time scoreboard on the UHL website? They sometimes totally screw up their boxscores.

Media Timeouts are inserted in the first stoppage of play after around 8 minutes has gone in each period. The time outs allow the radio stations to play commercials, which are nessesary to help pay for brodcasting. Because hockey doesnt have many long stoppages/timeouts like basketball, football, baseball, and other sports, these timeouts are nessesary.
