“That was the first or second time we all got fired,” Wedman said. “(Tuckman) just came on the bus and said ‘You’re all fired.’ So I called the owner of the team we were playing to tell him we weren’t coming and why we weren’t coming, and he said ‘Hey, I’ve got $2,000, come and play anyway.’ The players liked the idea. It was like barnstorming.

“And 20 minutes later as we were ready to pull out again, (Tuckman) came on the bus and said ‘You guys can’t play that game’ and I said ‘Why not? You fired us. We’re free to.’ Then he rehired us.”
