If you ran your local team, what would you name it?

If you got to run an expansion team in your local area, what would you name it?

Since I'm from the Northern VA/Washington DC area, it'd be a team from this area. A couple ideas:

-Washington Metropolitans ('Metros' for short.)
-Washington Statesmen
-Washington Ballers
-Washington Bullets (nah...those name rights couldn't be TOO expensive! :wink: )

-Virginia Monticellos
-Virginia Bears
-Virginia Showtime

-Potomac Cannons (a shoutout to the minor-league baseball team, the Prince William Cannons. Name rights might be an issue, plus the fact it's a MINOR league baseball team might make it a bad idea.)

I don't know...some bad ones, some good ones. Maybe I'll think of some more later. Anyone got any ideas?

This thread should probably be in the "general other sports" section, as I guess you are asking about any sport and not just a men's basketball team name.

Since I am in Metro Detroit, my team would refer to this region. When there was talk about putting a Frontier League baseball team in Mt Clemens (a Detroit suburb), the name I thought of submitting if they were to have a name the team contest was "Motown Sounds." The AAA baseball team in Nashville uses "Sounds" as their name and I first learned of it when they were the AAA affiliate of the Detroit Tigers back in the 80's. I figured if there can be a Nashville Sounds, why not a Motown Sounds? I don't know if the term Motown Sound is trademarked by Motown Records or not, but I thought it would be a good name. No matter though. The proposed stadium, and therefore the team, in Mt Clemens is dead since the new mayor was elected last year.

If I owned a team in Gary Indiana, I would call them the
Gary: Steel Ores, Steal, Stealers, or Stealheads. :D

Because they steal players from Rockford..IE Snap Hunter. :P

If I owned Lightning, and fans wanted new name, I would do fan contest with following choices.

Romans or Legions(rockford=lrg Italian pop.), ForestCats or Pumas or ForestKings(rockford is forest city), BlueCats or StoneCats or RockCats(rock river fish), RedBulls, RedBarons, Polecats or Skunks, Raccoons, Rebounds, Vampires, BlackSmiths, BlackBears,

To be historically accurate Romans or Legions would have to be silver, dark red, and black....those colors could work for many of the others and/or current Lightning colors could also.

If I owned a team here in Saskatoon I'd call it one of these names:

Prairie Fire - I even suggested this one for the Slam in 1993. Suprisingly, it actually is now the Rugby Canada Super League's Saskatchewan team name. So I'm not sure about the naming rights.

Quakers - This would be a salute to the old senior hockey team here in town. At one point they were a NY Rangers farm club.

Legends - When the Canadian Baseball League used this name, I actually thought it was good. I'm sure any existing trademarks would either be expired or cheaply had.

Blues - Since the St. Louis Blues essentially were to move here in 1983, how about a real Saskatchewan Blues team?

Any name would be good so long as the Saskatoon Riot was never used again. Who would name their team after the fact Saskatoon was the only city in Canada to riot after the Jays won? It was the stupidest reason for calling a team anything.
